Kathryn Shields Obituary

Kathryn Ann Shields

July 12, 1946 - November 5, 2018

Kathryn Ann Shields, 72, wife of Woody (Lenwood) Shields, passed away at her home on November 5, 2018, surrounded by her loving family after courageously fighting a six-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. Kathy was inspirational in her fight to all who knew her.
Kathy was born July 12, 1946 in Burbank, CA to Max and Kathryn (O'Connor) Serna. Her family moved to San Francisco in 1963, where she attended Balboa High School (Class of 1964) and City College of San Francisco.
During her senior year at Balboa she met her future husband, Woody, and they married on June 13, 1970. Kathy and Woody moved to Walnut Creek in 1979, where they lived and raised their family in the wonderful Woodlands neighborhood, for over 30 years. The first few years of living in Walnut Creek, Kathy commuted into San Francisco where she worked for IBM, then took a position closer to home with Jacuzzi Whirlpool Bath Corporation, and eventually retired from Kennedy Wilson Property Management.
Kathy and Woody moved to Tahoe-Donner and lived there for three years where she enjoyed exploring the many hiking and biking trails, shops, and restaurants, as well as volunteered at the Tahoe Forest Hospice Gift and Thrift Shop.
When Woody retired they moved to Foresthill, CA. Kathy loved her newfound friends and neighbors, and especially enjoyed the morning walks with the "Silverleaf Strollers" and her K9 companion Oxford. She would also volunteer her time with the local food closet, Elijah's Jar, and Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Kathy enjoyed her vacations in Lake Tahoe, Hawaii and The Sea Ranch with numerous friends and relatives, especially Grant and Sandra Stewart. You could often find her perusing cookbooks or trying out new recipes, reading multiple novels, spending time in the garden, going out with "The Girls", enjoying a glass of wine, talking and laughing with friends, and offering kindness and compassion to all who met her.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Woody of Foresthill, CA; son, Jason of Truckee, CA; daughter Krista Sender and her husband Dan of Auburn, CA; her grandsons Henry and Isaac Sender of Auburn, CA; and brother, Lawrence Serna of Oxnard, CA. She is also survived by one niece, four nephews, and many cousins and relatives throughout California. Her father, Max, and her mother, Kathryn, preceded Kathy in death.
Kathy and her family are appreciative to all of the doctors and nurses at the UC Davis Medical Center and Vitas Hospice, who provided such wonderful care, kindness, and compassion. In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity, or Metavivor, in her name.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
