Mary Chakos Obituary
Mary Chakos

February 15, 1929 - October 19, 2018

Beloved wife and mother, Mary Chakos, passed away suddenly on October 19, 2018. She was born in Gary, Indiana, the eldest daughter of Eli and Maria Gusan, immigrants from Romania. She met her husband, Tom J. Chakos, in middle school and they graduated from Froebel High School. Mary and Tom came to San Francisco in 1960, lived in Novato until moving to Hillsborough in 1970.
Mary loved listening to music, dancing, the theater, gardening, flower arranging, reading, needlepoint, embroidery, and was adventurous in the kitchen. She was a long-time member of community groups - Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Mission Hospice Auxiliary, Carolands Garden Club, Fine Arts Museum, BHNC, and PGCC. Her life was dedicated to her family devoting endless support, time, and love. Mary's kindness, "sweet as a button nature", beauty inside and out, and love will be dearly missed.
Mary is survived by her husband, Tom, of 63 years, her children, Jim, Susan (Robert), Cathy, and Alan, all living on the Peninsula, siblings Cornelius Stankich, Virginia Kos (Dennis), John Gusan, granddaughter Sophia, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Eli Gusan (09-26-18).
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 13 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at Crosby N. Gray in Burlingame. A private burial will be at St. John's Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be on Wednesday, November 14 at 1:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church of Burlingame with a Celebration of Life to follow at The Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health (400 Hamilton Avenue, Suite 340, Palo Alto, CA 94301) and Mission Hospice Auxiliary (1670 South Amphlett Boulevard, Suite 300, San Mateo, CA. 94402 or www.MissionHospice.org).
