Melvin Mah Obituary

Dr. Melvin Mah Died Saturday May 21 at UCSF Hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was 56 years old. He is survived by his wife of thirty-one years, Mary Arii Mah; his daughter Melanie, a recent graduate of Boston University living in New York; and his son Matthew, an undergraduate at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is also survived by his parents Tip & Jake Mah of San Francisco; his brother Donald and sister-in-law Julie of Los Angeles; his brother Christopher, sister-in-law Jocelyn and niece Catherine of Fremont. Melvin was born in Brawley, California and came to San Francisco at the age of nine. He attended Washington High in the city ('72), U.C. Berkeley ('76), and the California College of Podiatric Medicine ('79 ). He practiced as a podiatrist in the city for thirty years. Melvin kept his watch running five minutes fast, and never wasted his time. He loved active sports - running at the Bay Club in the early morning hours, skiing and mountain biking at Tahoe all year round. He loved food and wine - wine in particular - and he also loved travel. He took his family abroad every year, returning to Paris again and again. A memorial service will be held on Saturday July 2, at 11 AM, at the San Jose Buddhist Betsuin, 640 N. 5th Street, San Jose. Contributions in Melvin's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mel: It has been 7 years since we said goodbye. We all sorely miss you and Mary. I'm sure you two are overlooking down on Matthew and Melanie and their progress in life. One thing of note was our musical connection and how we shared listening to various artists - I miss that. Nowadays when we attend concerts, I would say Mel would have been so stoked beyond excitement if he was here. Good times brother. We'll be thinking of you two next week at Dad's 90th. RIP

So very shocked to hear about my uncle Melvin Mah. Only knew about it when I told Jolynn (my daughter) to try contacting Melanie & Matthew. Though I only met Uncle Melvin once when we came to SF 15 years ago, I still remember the Thanksgiving we had at his dad's place and dinner at a restaurant he took us to. It's really a shock to all of us in Malaysia here. We will surely miss our uncle Melvin.

I was terribly sorry to hear of Dr. Mah's death - I had not known about it until I recommended him to a friend, and she told me she found the Yelp message telling of it.

Since I moved to San Francisco 13 years ago, Dr. Mah had been my podiatrist. I always enjoyed visiting his office because of his friendly and warm manner, good sense of humor, and general agreeableness. Once, when I had been laid off and my insurance company wouldn't pay for a visit to him, Dr. Mah told me nevermind, just give him some computer advice in payment (since that's what I do for work).

A very kind and nice guy. He will be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Mah when my podiatrist was on vacation. His kindness, understanding, ability to empathize with patients, and personable demeanor resonated with me immediately. So much so that after that first appointment I chose to make him my podiatrist. Every time I called Dr. Mah's office with a medical issue/question, I spoke with Dr. Mah that day or he would return my phone message that same day. He was and will remain an exemplary model for all physicians. His memory will live on in all those that he touched.

Mary, Melanie, and Mathew,

My thoughts are with you and your family as you cope with the loss of a husband and father. Growing up, we'd see one another at various family gatherings--always like strangers but connected by family. In the past year, Melvin was treating me for an array of foot problems. During my office visits, he'd ask about my parents and then talk of his family. Last year, he scheduled my follow-up visit around his trip back to the east coast to help Melanie move. I'll miss these office visits when we'd share updates on our families.

Your memories of Melvin will keep him near you. Take care of one another.

My condolences to the Mah family. My mother who was 97 when she passed away last year was Dr. Mah's patient. He was always very nice, professional and compassionate. I will never forget how when my mother had trouble getting out of the house, Dr. Mah went to the house to provide service to her. Our family will always remember him. He was a very special man. May he rest in peace. He will be missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers to his family.

I only saw Dr. Mah twice but he stood out as the most outgoing doctor I ever had the pleasure to meet. I'm very sorry to hear of his passing. I saw him once before the holidays and when I returned we both exchanged stories of our holiday travel problems. He just kept asking me more and more questions - he was so interested to hear about my traveling. And thanks to his help, I've been able to walk pain-free for months. My thoughts and prayers go to out to his family and friends.

My brother, you were always there if I needed you, and helped raise me so well and I could not be where I am without you. Your love for your wife and kids was always evident and I try to emulate that with my family. Your staff once told me you were so happy that day because you were going to see Catherine soon made me feel so happy. I miss you and think of you daily.

Papa Mah (as I affectionately called him, I think on his invitation perhaps) was the epitome of culture, class, charisma and charm. Sharp as a tack and with a nose for wine that would make any Frenchman green with jealousy, he was first and foremost consistently kind. As is normally the case during college summer breaks, I always planned to pick my friends up and head somewhere else...but at the Mah house the party often stayed right at home; a casual 15 minute chat with Papa Mah could easily turn into a lesson about a new Pinot and the excitement of the many European cities we'd been to or still had yet to visit (an hour later, "Hey, are we still going out, or do you wanna just stay here?") I'm glad I got to know him, and the rest of this wonderful family. Much love to the Mah's during this hard time. I'll miss Papa Mah. San Francisco won't be the same without him.

I've been seeing Dr. Mah for about a year almost once a month and he was always the highlight of my day. He truly was my favorite doctor and he will be missed.

I was shocked to receive news of Dr. Mah's passing. I had just seen him for a follow up visit and we had our usual friendly exchange about kids, vacations, and life. I had no idea he was ailing in any way; he was always so full of life and high spirits every time I saw him. He was an extremely competent and caring physician in whom I had absolute trust. My deepest condolences to his family for their loss. He will be missed.

I am stunned to hear of his passing.

While Dr. Mah wasn't my primary podiatrist, I did see him several times and always remembered his passion and calm demeanor. He truly loved working with patients to resolve their medical needs in a comforting and professional manner.

Not only was he a fine doctor, but he was a great person and his staff always had positive things to say about him.

My condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues as he rests in peace.

Words cannot express the love we all have for you and your beautiful soul. You were a generous, brilliant, selfless, and caring human being, and as my dear brother stated, a best friend to many. Thank you for taking us around the world, for the many exquisite meals you treated us to, for your infectious laugh, and for believing in us every second of every day. Your passion for your work, your life, and family is beyond admirable, and I aspire to be half the person you were. We were all lucky to have you in our lives. I will love you forever. Whether it was taking us across the globe or always being home at 5 for dinner, you always put our family first. I cherish every minute we spent together and the warmth of all your love. You were the best husband to Mommy, the greatest dad to Melanie and I, but most importantly you are my best friend and I'll always love you.
