Raymond Lewis Obituary

LEWIS, Raymond E. - Ray died peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 17th, after a long illness. A long time Marin resident with a deep love of the Bay Area landscape, he was born in New York on April 13, 1923. Ray received his bachelors degree at U.C. Berkeley, where he met his future wife, Lois Rosenberg. While working for The Childs Gallery in Boston, MA. from 1950 to 1952, he discovered his calling. He and his young family returned to the Bay Area. In 1952, at age 28, Ray opened his own gallery, R. E. Lewis, Inc., at 555 Sutter Street in San Francisco. He specialized in original prints from Old Masters to the 20th century, Japanese woodblock prints, and Indian miniature paintings. He and Lois, who became his part time partner, traveled extensively on business, making friends from coast to coast and in Europe. Ray was a self taught scholar and dealer who gained recognition for his integrity, knowledge, and passion for his subject. He will be missed by many for his contribution to their appreciation of art, and for his wonderful sense of humor. Ray is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Lois M. Lewis; loving daughters Karen Lewis, Cassandra Lewis, and Jan Lewis Slavid (Marvin Slavid); and grandchildren Carlisle Lewis Crumley and Gabrielle Slavid. The Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco will have a show in his memory, opening with a reception on Saturday, December 3rd, 2005. Memorial plans are pending. Donations in his memory may be made to the purchasing fund at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Please contact Judy Gough at 415 750-3669.
