Richard Cook Obituary
Richard F. Cook

Richard F. Cook died peacefully in Oakland, CA on July 26, 2018, five weeks shy of his 96th birthday, concluding a life well lived.

Dick was born in Newark, NJ to Olive Foster and Kenneth Bartlett Cook, proudly claiming descent from travelers on the Mayflower. His family settled in Providence, RI, where he spent many summers at a camp on Cape Cod, leading to his love of "all things water." He also loved music and playing piano and drums.

Dick entered Cornell University prior to World War II and studied mechanical engineering, crewed as sixth stroke with the Freshmen team which won the Poughkeepsie Regatta, and joined Seal and Serpent Fraternity. He entered the army and joined an engineering group assigned to the University of Minnesota for specialized secret training. There he met and married Betty Blanche Heneman in 1943. The young couple moved to Oak Ridge, TN where he served his country in the Y12 program as part of the Manhattan Project.

At war's end, he was discharged and returned with his wife and first child, Susie, to finish his studies at Cornell. Upon graduation, the family settled in Providence, where Rick was born. Dick had a long and successful career in the textile industry, participating in many advances in textile engineering, always keen to make things work right. His family enjoyed their time living in Providence, Short Hills, NJ, and Stonington, CT. Dick was an avid and accomplished sailor, golfer, and bridge player, always ready for the next challenge. Betty died in 1992, and he later married Joan Clark Moffett, who predeceased him. His two siblings, Kathryn Bartlett Bowen and Robert Bartlett Cook, predeceased him, as did his daughter-in-law, Stephenie.

At age 90, he undertook his last travel adventure and moved to Oakland, CA, and enjoyed the Bay Area for the remainder of his life. He is survived by both of his children, Susan Cook Hoganson (John), Richard F. Cook, Jr., two grandchildren, Richard W. Cook (Gretchen) and Sarah Cook Leggett (Thomas), two great-grandchildren, Ryder and Lucille, and many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Lake Park Retirement and Residence Home, 1850 Alice St., Oakland, CA on August 25 at 3 pm. Burial will follow in the family plot in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, MA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cook Hoganson Family Endowment for Special Collections, c/o Graduate Theological Union, 2400 Ridge Rd, Berkeley, CA 94709.
