Rosalind "Bobbie" Singer

July 15, 1924 - January 24, 2018

Born Rosalind Ruth Schoenfeld in New York, NY. In childhood lived at fashionable addresses in mid Manhattan and attended Ethical Culture Schools. Early on disturbed by social and economic inequities, she became active in progressive causes as a teenager and never stopped. Earned Masters Degrees in history from Dominican College and public health from the University of California, Berkeley. Teacher, writer, organizer, cookie baker, listener, questioner, philanthropist, bicyclist, joke and storyteller, wife to 3 husbands, mother, curriculum developer, peace and social justice activist – proud of getting arrested protesting at the Nevada nuclear weapons test site- several times. Founding member of the Peace Caucus of the American Public Health Association and recipient of the Dorothy Nyswander Award of the Society for Public Health Education for outstanding contributions to the field. Lived in Berkeley from 1963-2006, when she relocated to Seattle to be close to her son. Survived by her beloved son Dan Roberts of Seattle and foster daughter Michelle Coval of Santa Rosa. Donations in her memory can go to Planned Parenthood or the Bobbie Singer Scholarship Fund at the School of Public Health, UC Berkeley.
