Sara Porter

Sara "Sally" Lynn (Thompson) Porter

Sally passed away peacefully from abdominal cancer at age 76, surrounded by family, on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018. Born and raised in Indianapolis, she was a magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Miami University of Ohio, where she was president of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority chapter. A resident of the Bay Area since 1963, Sally was a teacher and spent two years in the Peace Corps on Saipan, in the Mariana Islands, with her husband, Ken. Later in life she earned an MSW from U.C. Berkeley and spent many years as a school counselor.
Devoted mother of her three children, Theodore, Daniel and Amy, and a thrilled and loving grandmother of granddaughters Claudia, Kenzie and Madeline. Adored by Ken over their 55 years of marriage after dating in high school and through college. Survived by Ken; their children and grandchildren; her sister, Marjorie Thompson; and her brother, David Thompson.
Sally was exceptionally caring and considerate of everyone she knew and was loved in turn by all who knew her. Her formidable intelligence, curious nature, hearty sense of humor and quick, infectious laugh made her a joy to be around. She nurtured and cherished her wide circle of friends both old and new. She loved nature, flowers, Hawaii, museums, history, cards and board games, aqua aerobics at the YMCA, traveling often and everywhere, making art with her friends and sister, watching "Jeopardy!" (she had all the answers), exploring new places and learning new things. Her spirit was never lighter or freer than when she was near the ocean. To the last, she was grateful for her full life and happy family. She will be forever missed.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, Oct. 12, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 66 Saint Stephen's Drive, Orinda, CA.
