Shirley Price Harper

Photo Shirley Price Harper A longtime Piedmont resident, Shirley Price Harper passed away on February 17, 2008 at the age of 81. Born in Oakland, she was the only child of Thomas Moore Price and Alice Bone Price. She graduated from Piedmont High School, and earned her degree from Stanford University in 1948. While at Stanford, she met her husband, Arthur Olcese Harper. They were married in 1951 at her parents' home in Piedmont. Shirley and Art lived in several California communities in the early years. In 1963, they moved to Piedmont where they raised their children through high school. Shirley is survived by her husband, Art; two sons, Tom Harper (wife, Marie Rangel) of Willow Park, TX, and John Harper (wife, Ellen Tohn) of Wayland, MA. She is also survived by her son-in-law Ted Klopp (wife, Kathy Klopp) of Santa Rosa, and five grandsons: Emmett Klopp, Charlie Harper, and Daniel, Seth, and Jeremy Harper. She is predeceased by a daughter, Janet Harper Klopp, who passed away in 1998. Shirley lived for her children. Throughout their youth, Shirley volunteered for multiple organizations as a way of providing opportunities for the kids. Shirley took care to instill in her children an appreciation for learning, a moral compass, and an awareness of life's opportunities. Shirley also was active in other community organizations, including the First Congregational Church of Oakland, the Bonita Garden Club, and a local investment club. For decades, she and Art convened an annual fall weekend getaway for a group of friends in Little River on the Mendocino coast where they shared stories on the foibles of life and offspring. She will be missed by her husband, children, grandsons, and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on March 30, 2008, 1:00 PM at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the (www.cancer.org) or a charity of choice.
