William Holsman Obituary
William Kerr Holsman

December 20,1931 - July 12, 2015

Bill Holsman died peacefully after a brief illness, with his wife of 36 years, Carol Langbort, by his side. He arrived in San Francisco from Chicago in 1958 with his first wife, Elizabeth Engstrom (recently deceased) and his three children, Belinda Kerr, Mark and Christopher Holsman. He graduated from Principia Upper School in 1951 and attended Principia College until he entered the U.S. Navy. He then served 18 months in Tokyo during the Korean War. In 1956 he received his B.A. from the University of Chicago, in the final class of the Robert Hutchins Great Books Program. He attended the University of Chicago Law School, and Lincoln University (LLB., 1961).

In San Francisco, he first worked for AAA Insurance, and then was a Trust Officer at Crocker National Bank, prior to opening his solo law practice in the financial district in 1967. In 1994 he became a Certified Specialist in the field of Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Law. In 2010 he partnered with Ann MacArthur and the firm became Holsman and MacArthur.

Bill loved the wilderness and for more than 25 years went on annual backpacking trips with friends. He learned to speak Spanish and traveled frequently to Mexico, Spain and Nicaragua. He had a zest for life and went on several walking trips in Spain, including the Camino to Santiago.

Bill had a great impact on many people's lives and will be fondly remembered for his vitality, integrity, generosity, quick wit, warmth, kindness, sharp mind and dedication to his work, his church, and his wife. He was working in his office until one week before his death.

The world lost an amazing soul and we know there is a well-dressed man in heaven wearing a bow-tie and a beret smiling down at us. Donations in Bill's memory may be made to the CA State Parks Foundation, the New Century Chamber Orchestra, the Nicaraguan Children's Friendship Committee, or a .

A memorial service will be held at the end of September.
