Fr. Wilton S. Smith
Fr. Wilton S. Smith died peacefully on Feb. 12, 2021 in San Rafael, Father Smith was a priest for 62 years and was 88 years old. Fr. Wil was born June 19, 1932 in San Francisco. He was the son of Gertrude and Wilton Smith and is predeceased by them and his sister, Elinor DeMattei. He is survived by his Brother-in-Law, Robert DeMattei, (Kay); his nephews Michael DeMattei and Paul DeMattei; his nieces: Susan DeMattei (Dave Wiens) and their sons Cooper, Ben and Sam; Nancy DeMattei; Lisa DeMattei (Matt Naworski) and their daughters Jessica and Ava. His is also survived by his cousin, Sister Marilyn Medau, with whom he had a wonderful lifelong friendship, and cousin Margaret Jenkins ( Lou) and their children Jean Schulte, Laura Fahy, and Dan Jenkins.
Fr. Wil was ordained on June 12, 1958 after his studies at St. Patrick's Seminary He served at St. Catherine's /St. Martin's /St. Emydius /Epiphany/St. Isabella's/ St. Veronica's in South SF where he was installed Pastor from 1990 to 2002. Father Smith retained his generous nature, phenomenal memory and steady focus through his 18 years of retirement, despite the slow, but relentless progress of Parkinson's. He retired to Clergy House and then Nazareth House. Due to the closure on Nazareth House he moved to Golden Home Extended Care. He is very thankful for all the staff at both the Nazareth House and Golden Home Extended Care.
Fr. Wil enjoyed tennis, Peanuts cartoons, Lake Tahoe, & loved the Bible. He loved his Catholic faith and loved family and friends, he will be dearly missed.
There will be no public Mass at this time due to the pandemic. Remembrances may be sent to the Priest Retirement Fund, One Peter Yorke Way, San Francisco, CA 94109.
