Cora Chan Obituary
Cora Lee Chan A native San Franciscan, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2011. Born on November 14, 1912, she lived a full and happy life and is survived by her devoted husband of 77 years, William Y. Chan, and her children, Curtiss Y. Chan and Lori Y. Chan, and her daughter-in-law, Jadine S. Wong, and son-in-law, Peter L. Greene. Cora started her life in Chinatown, the daughter of Lee Kam Chin and Lee Lum Shee. Her father was a Chinese doctor and she loved to remember making the 'rounds' with him. She was the seventh of nine children, in a close and affectionate family: Chang Wah (Grace), Chingwah, Edwar (Lilly; Moonbeam), King Wah, Agnes (Harris), Horace, Marion (Bill) and Elmer (Gerrie) Lee, and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews. A graduate of UC Berkeley, Class of '35, she integrated her education with a deep and loving spirit, a kind and witty heart, and a joie de vivre few could match. She and her loving husband William became world travelers making life-long friends wherever they went, and exploring history and cultures with an eye to detail. They were also "foodies", inspiring one of their children's friends to declare, "You have to get up very early in the morning to beat the Chans to a restaurant!" Mom, you always were there for us, your family and friends: listening, giving wise advice when appropriate, supporting us as we found our own ways, showing us by example what it means to live from one's inner values with grace, joy, humanity, compassion, and zest. We will always love you, miss you deeply, and be at peace that you are free from earthly bonds. You will be in our hearts and minds forever. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel at Woodlawn Cemetery, Colma, on Fri., Sept. 2, at 1:30 p.m. Please make donations to the Jewish Home of S.F., UCSF or your favorite charity.
