Robert Braunreiter Obituary

Robert F. Braunreiter Went to God peacefully in San Francisco on February 6, 2010. Coach Bob was born on October 3, 1924 in Milwaukee, WI to Joseph Braunreiter and Anna Hornik Braunreiter. He graduated from Messmer High School in Milwaukee and spent one year at Regis College in Denver, having been recruited for the Regis basketball team. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought in General Patton's army in Belgium and Germany reaching the rank of Technical Sergeant. After WWII, he was recruited to play football at the University of San Francisco where he met his future wife, Barbara Jean Olson, a native San Franciscan and student at San Francisco College for Women (Lone Mountain College). Bob earned his B.S. degree in German with a minor in History from USF in 1949. Bob obtained a Masters in German from U.C. Berkeley and married Barbara in 1951. Bob's goal in life was to teach and coach others. For 35 years of his teaching career he was at Lowell High School in San Francisco where he taught German and various physical education classes. He also served as assistant coach for the varsity football team and coached JV baseball. Next to teaching German and coaching, Bob loved football and had a weekend "dream job" as a member of the 49ers "chain gang" during the Bill Walsh-Joe Montana era. Bob lovingly cared for Barbara when she was diagnosed with cancer and she passed away in 2003. Bob and Barbara raised three wonderful daughters together: Mary Braunreiter Sherman, MD., Eileen Braunreiter, Esq., and Therese Braunreiter Jacobson, MFT. Bob is survived by his daughters, Mary, Eileen and Therese; sons-in-law, Steven Sherman, MD., George Duesdieker, Esq. and Allan Jacobson, Ph.D.; brother Carl Braunreiter and sister-in-law Leona Braunreiter, sisters Agnes Fritsch and Rosie Bramm; cherished granddaughters Sarah Sherman, Alice and Claire Duesdieker; brother-in-law Jack Olson and his wife Mary Olson. Bob was preceded in death by his siblings Anton, Margaret, Clara, Mary, Joseph, Adelaide, Edmund, Paul, and Rosie. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, March 13, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church, 650 Parker Ave., San Francisco. A reception will follow on the USF campus. Thank you to the wonderful staff at AlmaVia of San Francisco for taking such good care of our father for the last 3 years and to Pathways Hospice for making his passing peaceful. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pathways Hospice, www.pathwayshealth.org, Lowell High School Alumni Association, www.lowellalumni.org, or USF, http://web.usfca.edu/giving/

Bob was a treasured friend, mentor and colleague at Lowell. My condolences to his family.

Was wir ausstrahlen in die Welt,
die Wellen, die von unserem Sein ausgehen,
das ist es, was von uns bleiben wird,
wenn unser Sein längst dahingegangen ist.

My deepest Sympathy. My mother was Marie Strachota nee Braunreiter. She often talked about her cousins but I don't recall her saying how successful Robert was. I often visit my grandparent's grave, Anton and Margaret and say a prayer by Joseph, Anna's and some of their children's graves which is next to it. I vaguely rememeber them. I did know Robert's brother Joe who visited my Aunt Eleanor Brinkman nee Braunreiter who I took care of the last few years. He was very good to her. Again, my deepest sympathy! Mark Strachota

I will never forget the look on Uncle Bobby's face when my Mom (Adelaide F Braunreiter Fons), surprised him at his birthday party in 1994..., it was a look of joy and love that I will carry the rest of my life. The Braunreiter's had 12 children, and as one can imagine, the enormity of the family spread each sibling into many different directions. I did not have much interaction with my San Francisco Uncles, but my Mom always radiated every time she spoke of her brother Bobby: her love and respect for him transcended time and proximity!
My thoughts and prayers are especially with Mary, Eileen and Therese, and their families, as well as all the Braunreiter's/Olson's and whomever else Uncle Bobby's life/spirit impacted/influenced...
With Love, Bernadette Fons

Mr. Braunreiter was my German instructor at Lowell. His enthusiasm for the language and patience in the classroom made his class one of my favorites -- I attribute being polylingual now to his lessons. My condolences to Mr. Braunreiter's family. (M. Batchelder, '70)
