William Carr Obituary

William Curtis Carr Oct. 1, 1926 - Jan. 10, 2012 Bill passed away peacefully at Villa Fontana in San Jose surrounded by his loving daughter, Anne, his caring grandchildren Coco and Phil, and attentive son-in-law, Andre. Bill was born to Capt. Earl Curtis Carr MD, USN, and Bernadine Carr, in Spokane, WA. While growing up he lived all over the US and in the US Virgin Islands. He graduated from the Univ. of Pennsylvania with a degree in history in 1946, then immediately received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. In May 1947 he shipped out for Tsingtao, China where he served with the 1st Marines, also known as the "China Marines" helping to protect Chiang Kai-Shek as Mao Zedong was advancing. In 1948 he was stationed at Guam, and later returned to Camp Lejeune, NC. From 1951 to 1953 Bill was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he was the brig officer. In 1953, Capt. Carr was ordered to Korea. After his return stateside, he went to Camp Pendleton, and on to Twentynine Palms, CA in 1954. Bill left the Marine Corps in 1958 to pursue a legal career, graduating from Hastings College of the Law with a JD. Bill enjoyed being an attorney and retired in 1990 as a full partner at Hanna and Brophy Law Firm, with offices in San Jose and San Francisco. Once retired, Bill taught himself to use a computer and enjoyed many years of genealogical research. Typically, he could be found simultaneously reading 3 or 4 books, mostly about military history. He always had a faithful bulldog at his side or in his lap. Bill was an avid Navy football fan, and until he was physically unable, he would travel to the Army-Navy game each year. "Beat Army!" Bill had an infectious smile, and during the last few years he would greet his visitors and caregivers with the grin that they all came to love and will miss. Bill Carr leaves behind his daughter, Anne Carr Kobel (Andre) of Los Gatos and a son David BH Carr. Bill was pre-deceased by his older son, William Curtis Carr, Jr. "Curt" in 1998. Bill will be missed by his grandson Phil Kobel (Angela) and great grandchildren Catherine and Owen of San Jose, and also by his granddaughter Corinne "Coco" Kobel (Jess)) and great grandson Ethan, of South Lake Tahoe. He is also survived by Curt's daughters: Lindsey A. Carr and Ashley Carr Mueller. Requiem Mass will be celebrated for William Carr at Christ Church Parish, 770 N. El Camino Real, San Mateo on Friday, January 20, at 1:30 PM. A gathering will follow immediately thereafter in the Parish Hall. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. If desired, please send any donations to Hospice of the Valley, 4850 Union Ave., San Jose, CA 95124.

Subject: BILL CARR, October 1, 1926 to January 10, 2012. Hanna and Brophy from to retirement in 1990.

“The most honest decent man, he never took advantage of anyone.

He was fair and honest and a skilled attorney.

I have never forgotten how he cross examined my client's doctor,

‘ turning him inside out' and yet with the upmost honesty and fairness”,

Arthur Levy.

Art has, on many occasions, spoken of Bill with fondness and admiration.

Respect from our most skilled advocate, what greater testimonial could

Bill receive.

You who knew him share with his family and friends a deep sense of loss.

For who did not know him, those who follow in his footsteps, his virtues

should be remembered and be your goal.

Goodbye to our loved and respected partner, the manager of our San Jose office

where he served from 1965 to his retirement in 1990.

Thanks Art.

I worked many years ago with Bill Carr at H&B. He had a great sense of humor, quick wit...always made me laugh. I will always remember him.
