RICHARD CARLSON Obituary
Richard C. Carlson San Francisco, CA Richard C. Carlson died peacefully the morning of May 1, 2012 in the presence of family and comforted by the loving care of his partner, Rafael, his sister, Chris, his cousin, Pam, Kaiser of San Francisco Hospice Services, his extended family and dear friends. Rick was born in Los Angeles, CA on March 21, 1943 to Hilbert and Irene Carlson and moved with his family to Santa Barbara in 1948. In 1957, Rick entered St. Anthony's Seminary and, while there, graduated high school. He started his novitiate training as a Franciscan at San Miguel, completed his Bachelor of Arts at San Luis Rey College and studied theology at Mission Santa Barbara. Rick decided to leave the seminary in 1966, worked for UC Santa Barbara Library and then volunteered for the Peace Corps serving in the Dominican Republic until 1971. After briefly working for Brunswig Drug Company, Rick's Peace Corps training helped him obtain a Spanish-speaking Social Worker I position for the County of San Mateo. While learning new skills on the job, Rick also furthered his education by obtaining his Masters in Social Work from San Francisco State. Rick enjoyed a 38-year career with the County where his skillful, deliberate approach led to promotions as both a social worker and court investigator and culminated in his hiring as Chief Court Investigator. He cherished the friendships and public and professional relationships made during his career and liked being part of a collaborative network whose members were united by the desire to address community needs. His advocacy for the elderly, disabled and disenfranchised was rooted in his recognition of our shared humanity and the importance of caring for one another. Rick was a gifted gardener and enjoyed travel, films, music, researching his family genealogy and visiting with loved ones. He will be deeply missed and is survived by his partner, Rafael, his sister, Chris, his Aunt, Margie, his cousins, Pam, Carol, and Kathy, his nephews, Jim, John (Patricia), Jeff (Lekhini) and, Joe (Kristen), grandnieces Cheyene, Kelsey and Elizabeth, and grandnephew James. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to one of Rick's favorite charities, Ombudsman Services of San Mateo County, 711 Nevada Street, Redwood City, CA 94061, Attn: Tippy Irwin. A memorial for Rick is planned for June 2, 2012 at the San Carlos Adult Community Center from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
