MELVIN SCHULER Obituary

Melvin A. Schuler Sculptor 1924-2012 The family and friends of Melvin Schuler want you to know that he died peacefully on Sunday May 20th at his home in Arcata Ca. and in the company of his beloved, long time partner, Ed Oliver. A native Californian, Schuler graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts and began his esteemed teaching career in 1947 at Humboldt State University. He was Professor Emeritus when he died. Schuler will be best remembered for his large abstract sculptures using old growth redwood carved into abstract forms clad in copper and fastened with bronze nails. As in life, his art was blended with the work of his partner, Ed Oliver. His work was sought by collectors and often commissioned for public installations. Museums acquiring his work include the Smithsonian, Hirshhorn, Palm Springs, Phoenix, Oakland, La Jolla, Portland, Crocker and Storm King. Melvin's legacy as a teacher, friend and artist inspire his survivors to ask that you remember him by taking a walk in nature or pausing to admire a work of art. There will be no service or memorial.

[I just wanted to leave a short message memorializing the artist Melvin Schuler: ] His legacy lives on through the incredible work he gave us all.... One of his public sculptures is located in Seattle, WA. It's a short walk North of The Aquarium and Pier 62. It's on the East side of the street (not the Puget Sound side). ...For those who are familiar with "The Great Seal" of the state of Washington, it's somewhat reminiscent of it. Thank goodness for good people and good art and good work...it reminds us all to be good citizens...and of our shared responsibility to honor the past, the present, and especially OUR future...for our sake, our ancestor's sake, and our children's sake. ----

I just heard of Mel's passing and want to extend my love to Ed and all those connected with Mel. What a lovely man, always so interesting and knowledgeable! He taught me how to pound copper onto the pillars at Plaza Design in the '90's. Thanks Mel and God Speed!

My deepest sympathy to Mel's family for their loss. Mel was a major part of my student life in the Art Department at Humboldt and a great influence as an art teacher. His warmth and friendship will be missed always.

Dear Ed, I am so sad that Mel is gone from us. I know he loved you very much. All of us who could call him friend have been enriched by his life. He sparked a love of art in me that I did not know I had until I met him. You are so very lucky to have shared his life and been his soul mate. My love to you, Les Lee Launer

Dear Ed,
I was so sad to read of Mel's passing this morning. I have many fond memories of the lively conversations with the both of you, at local art openings, while in the company of Richard & Nancy. Mel was a truly talented artist who made our area proud! He had a great sense of humor and I know he must have been a wonderful teacher. Most importantly of all, he was just a great human being. The world will be a less beautiful place now that he's gone. I know this must be a very difficult time for you. I hope the memories of your life together will bring you comfort in the time ahead and that you know there is lots of love being sent your way.

Ed, my heart is sad but I will always think of watching your relationship with Mel when he countered your boldness and I'll smile. To me, Mel was a mentor of practicality and honesty. I'll cherish my acquaintance with him.

Mel was teaching at HSC when I first met him in 1949-50. Because there was no faculty lounge, students and instructors casually met over coffee in the old Co-Op. Mel was a great favorite.....young, friendly, interesting, ready to talk and laugh. His impressive sculptures and paintings remain, and his own kindness and sense of fun will not be forgotten.
