WILLIAM SCHULZ Obituary

William D Schulz
Oct 4, 1925 - Oct 9, 2012
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Bill was raised in Long Island. After a brief stint in the Army for World War II, he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and then obtained a PhD in Physics from Columbia University. He moved out to Berkeley, California to begin working at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where his career spanned twenty-seven years working in the Nuclear Design Department in Lagrangian hydrodynamics. His work has been immeasurably important in the defense and safety of the Nation.
An avid tennis player, Bill met Diane on the UC Berkeley tennis courts, and within a year, they were married, a marriage which lasted more than 51 years. After a stroke he passed away at 87 on October 9, 2012. Bill is survived by his wife, Diane, and his children, Christopher, Bruce, Hakima (Bruce's wife), and Elizabeth, as well as his two beloved grandchildren, Jasmin and Alexander. He will be missed.

I pray for this good man regularly. It's hard to believe eight years have passed. He was a great believer in science (quite brilliant), and, it seemed to me, politely accepted but could not bring himself to share in belief in a personal God, but he was an extraordinarily kind and selfless man. I often share actions he took to help one of his kids who was going through a rough patch as the greatest (and most unusual) example of love and concern that I ever witnessed. He and his jewel of a wife, "Señora Schulz," were very kind to me. I was blessed to have known him (both of them—and their three kids, my friends, upon whom they bestowed a not insignificant degree of their manner and attitude). May God rest his soul!
