I met Shiu briefly as a Veterans Service Officer. Shiu had been a Beach Master in the Navy. This is a hazardous job and nothing lands on a beach anywhere without their direction. The job had taken its toll on him like every other serviceman.
Shiu had just moved to Florida with Maureen and was looking for suitable work. I had a few things to fix around the house and he did them quickly and easily.
We were sitting on the porch and talking about a custom picnic table we saw in a catalogue. The table was expensive and Shiu looked at us all and said. "I can build better than that" We spent 350.00 on cedar and Shiu was off designing a better table. I ended up with a table 8'L by 4'W, and full length benches on both sides unattached for easier use.
Shiu designed and built the table in a couple days. A picnic table like this would start today between 800-1000 dollars.
All the people that use this table knew Shiu. This guy had a Heart of Gold and a sincere love for Maureen. He got sick and was gone so quickly it left a void with everyone that knew him. We use this table everyday and the story and his name are permanent fixtures in our lives. We thank the Lord for being able to meet him. He was a young man taken from life too soon. We miss him. Maureen, we are deeply sorry for your loss of your dear husband, Shiu...
Sincerely,

I remember Shiu for his warm, loving, generous heart and spirit, and his full hearty laugh as his eyes danced and sparkled with playful joyfulness. He loved
to cook and feed his friends and family. Food was bountiful at his gatherings together with Maureen's love of healthy food, a banquet of delicious memories.
Shiu was a gifted craftsman and whoever he worked for is lucky to have his work in their home.
I will miss Shiu and his beautiful spirit, yet I know his spirit is freely roaming through the hearts of those he loved and touched, and he's probably shining lots of love and laughter through the spheres. Maureen, he will never be far from you. Blessings to you. Love your friend, Gidalia

I just had the ability to look up Shui's full name meaning. I believe his name translates into (from last to first) "Heroic Brave Clear Bright Shining Water."
This to me is very appropriate of my memories of Shui. He had a very brave and honest heroism in his personality. His being shone with brightness and he is powerful and versatile like water.
I believe he has a very strong, passionate spirit that does go on.
My love goes out to Maureen and his whole family. While it must be hard to continue to live and grow without his wonderful pillar of a comforting physical presence, I do believe the memories of his love, kindness, strength and laughter can continue to fill your lives with the presence of his spirit.
After all, his personal ability to make sure you feel loved by him - aided by his unique stubborn willpower to get his point across - will make sure you continue to feel his arms around you. Even if it has to be in a dream or when you have a strong memory of him.
Remembering his strong clear spirit makes me feel Shui's love will continue bless his loved ones. May you all find wholeness and peace during this transition.

Shiu was one of my classical guitar students. He was a very hard worker, and the guitar helped him relax, although he sometimes took it too seriously. He was a good man.
Very compassionate. His face would light up when he was talking about his family and his kids Ben and Anna.
The work he did was very hard and exacting. And there was an art to it.
He loved music and he was a good student. I missed him when he moved away. He is at peace. My condolences to his family.

I was very surprised to hear of Shiu's passing I know that he fought a very hard fight. I could see that he did not want to leave you and his family yet. Please know that even though he is no longer physically present he is always with you every time you think of him he is there beside you loving you. He was and forever will be a blessing to all that he knew.

Dear Maureen, I was shocked to hear this sad news about Shiu, yet I thank you for reaching out to me here in California to let me know. Shiu left a lasting and very positive impression on me once he completed the expert workmanship in my home...which was alot, from installing new wood flooring, full upgrades to the kitchen and two bathrooms, his tile work was superb in all those rooms in addition to tiling my fireplace, he patiently helped me select the tile and granite for each of those rooms and all my appliances, and the beautiful wood flooring; and every day, I smile in appreciation for him and his immaculate work. Shiu was a man of dignity, kindness, honesty and respect. This world needs more people like Shiu. He will be greatly missed. I am thankful I had the opportunity to know Shiu and pray he is at peace now. I will always remember him. I pray for you, Maureen, and his children, that each of you will find peace thru his strength.

Though we didn't know Shiu for a long time, he was a great man. He was friendly and nice to everyone, he's an angel that was called back to heaven too early. He was generous, a kind soul. Even if he isn't here anymore, we're sure he would want us to stay strong, he has our prayers and I'm sure he's happy where he is.

I think Shiu will always be remembered by many people in the Bay Area (and elsewhere in the United States) with fondness and admiration for his personal generosity, his moral passion and integrity, his passionate opposition to all forms of censorship and injustice, and his intellectually free, independent and questioning spirit. His unselfish and beautiful soul will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to have worked and spoken with Shiu during the past few decades--and whose lives were touched by the example of which commitments and activities were most important in Shiu's life.

Maureen, i just found out abut this, via your email. It's devastating. Shiu was an exceptionally generous man, and a great cook, i really appreciated his group dinners. And i really appreciate all the energy he put forth into various efforts to make this world a better place, a deeply-committed activist for justice. His voice will be missed, as will his generosity. My best wishes to you, Maureen, and to his children. I'm thankful that i got to know him.
