Hanford Lockwood Obituary

Hanford "Hank" N.Lockwood, III

April 28, 1921 - September 5, 2015

Hank Lockwood passed away peacefully at home with his family near him in Burlingame, California on September 5, 2015. He was born on April 28, 1921 in Rockford, Illinois, the oldest of four children born to Hanford N. Lockwood II and Lillian (Atkinson) Lockwood. Both Hank and his father served in the Army during World War II, but his father died en route to a Japanese prisoner of war camp on a death ship sunk by the Allies transporting prisoners from the Cabanatuan Camp where personnel from the Bataan Death March were incarcerated.

Hank enlisted in the Army prior to World War II and received a Presidential appointment to West Point. He graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant on June 1, 1943 and married Anne "Nancy" Baldwin of Manila, Philippines on the same day. During the war, he became a flying instructor for the B-24 Bomber in Southern California, then toward the end of the war he was sent overseas to Iwo Jima in August 1945.

After the war, Hank moved his wife and two sons to Manila in June 1946 where he started his civilian career working for Macondray & Co, a Baldwin family business which was restarted during the postwar reconstruction.

In 1949, he changed jobs and started working for the Del Monte Corporation and moved his family to the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. In 1952, the family moved back to Manila where he became the manager of the Associated Companies Division of Macondray.

In 1969, Hank resettled the family back in the United States in Hillsborough, California, and with a partner purchased the Scotty Pen Co. located in San Francisco. When his partner found other opportunities, Scotty Pen was sold, and Hank started H.N. Lockwood, Inc. in Redwood City which does specialized industrial printing.

In 1998, his bride of 55 years, Anne, passed away after a long illness. Hank moved to Burlingame and shortly thereafter from H.N. Lockwood, Inc. which is still being run by his son, Dan, and his grandson, Tom.

Throughout his life, he had extensive interests including foreign travel by ship, horseback riding, Indian Motorcycles, and photography. Hank enjoyed sailboat racing and cruising in the tropics on a yawl custom-built in Hong Kong. His travels blessed him with a large number of good friends all over the world. He enjoyed his many years as a HAM radio operator and particularly loved practical jokes - he even gave a horse to a family as a going away gift two days before they were leaving the Philippines by plane! He always avoided letting them know when he was in town.

Hank is survived by his five sons and daughters-in-law: Hanford IV (Michele), Barry (Clotilde), Thomas (Melissa), Daniel (Susan), and Jeffrey (Galen). In addition, he has nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Hank also farmed a small area adjacent to a beach south of Manila where he grew coconuts and banana trees. He was concerned about the local community and provided the funds to print copies of text books at a nearby school. He also supported a local archaeological expedition to find and catalog export artifacts from China.

Hank loved well, lived large, and enjoyed life to the fullest. He requested that the family not hold a memorial service for him or he would be compelled to come back and haunt us forever! The family requests that if so moved contributions to the West Point Superintendent's Annual Fund be made in his name.

Fair seas and tailwinds, Hank. I'll always remember sailing from Coyote Point and Sea Ranch. Dan was a good friend of mine and you were a strong father figure to him and me as well. You did well.

Dan and Susan, I miss you guys. My condolences for your loss.

My condolences to Barry and Tom Lockwood , whom I remember well, on the loss of their amazing father-one of the real old timers from Manila. How wonderful to learn that he had such a long and full life. Their classmate at AS and swimming team member. Estelle Fisher '68
