Dirk Mackenzie Van Meurs

Aged 89, passed away January 12, 2016. Dirk will be greatly missed by his wife, Barbara (Bobby) Van Meurs; his three daughters - Krisa, Marta and Arianna; and five grandchildren - Andrew, Annalise, Erika, Alexandra, and Nick.

Born in Ross where he resided most of his life, Dirk attended Ross School, Tamalpais High School, and the University of Idaho. Dirk enjoyed a wide range of outdoor activities including gardening, fishing, tennis, SCUBA diving, and golf. He was a problem-solver par excellence and enjoyed his chainsaw, always ready to help his friends and neighbors with tree trimming. Dirk was passionate about gardening, tennis, and contributing to the creation of the beautiful gardens surrounding the Lagunitas Country Club. He was also involved in local organizations, serving as a trustee at the Marin Art & Garden Center.

After returning from Italy where he served in WWII, Dirk started West Coast Ship Chandlers, a successful company in San Francisco, which provisioned both foreign and domestic ships at ports in the San Francisco Bay Area. After selling the company, Dirk continued to pursue a wide range of interests; his love of wine led to a successful wine business. During his retirement, Dirk and Bobby enjoyed adventure travel to many exotic locales around the world.

Dirk is predeceased by his son, Erik, and his brother, Walter Van Meurs. A celebration of Dirk's life will be held at the Lagunitas Country Club from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm on February 21, 2016. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Marin Art & Garden Center, Box 437, Ross, CA 94957.
