Photo Ruben Edmundo Montes, Jr., M.D. Ruben Edmundo Montes, Jr., M.D., Neurologist and Director of the Stoke Center at Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco passed away in his sleep January 15, 2007 at his home in San Francisco. He was born on December 15, 1965 at the Fort Ord Army Hospital in Monterey Bay Area of California. He attended elementary school at Fort Ord and finished both elementary and middle schools at San Benancio Middle School. He graduated high school from Robert Louis Stevenson in Pebble Beach, CA. He attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with B.S. degree in Micro and Neuro Biology. He was accepted to the MD/PhD program at the University of California at San Francisco and completed his residency in neurology at Stanford University. He went on to complete a one-year fellowship in neurology through Harvard University at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. He began the practice of medicine in neurology at Kaiser San Francisco. Ruben had a great love of ice skating. He began his skating career at the age of 10. While living in New Hampshire, he competed and went on to place in the Junior Novice pairs at Northeastern sectionals. He continued to skate through college and medical school. As an adult he won a gold medal in the Adult Senior Pairs figure skating competition with his partner Sydney Thatcher. He also won a gold medal in single men's competition. Unable to continue skating due to a back injury he pursued a career as an ice skating judge in addition to the practice of medicine. He quickly climbed the judging ranks and became a U.S. national and international judge and was named the first judge for the Puerto Rican Figure Skating Association. Prior to his death, he was only able to judge one Puerto Rican National competition. Later this January he was scheduled to attend the 2007 State Farm U.S. National Championship as part of the medical team. He is survived by his beloved life partner of 12 years, David Lewis; parents, Ruben Sr. and Mary Montes; and sister, Marisa Montes. In memory of "Rubencito" the PRFSF will honor his name and memory at our 2007 Puerto Rican National championship to be held in New Jersey, March 10, 2007 and create the "Ruben Montes Foundation," fostering the development of those skaters of Puerto Rican heritage who wish to develop but do not have the funds to continue to learn the sport. Contributions to the "Ruben Montes Foundation" can be made c/o lspano/PRFSF, 3871 Farrcroft Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030. Visitation will be Friday, January 19, 2007 from 10:00am-5:00pm with Rosary, Friday, 7:00pm at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901. Services will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Spreckles, CA, Saturday, January 20, 2007 at 10:00am. Burial will follow the Mass at San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey, CA.
