David E. Cunningham Obituary
David died on January 31 at Regency Park Oak Knoll Retirement Home, where he had lived since 2014. The youngest of the three children of Howard and Hortense “Tonsie” (McLaughlin) Cunningham, he was born November 5, 1932, in Los Angeles.

During World War II, Howard rejoined the US Navy, and the family moved to the North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado. David remembered those years with great fondness, especially his gymnastic act with Bert Goodrich, the first Mr. America, while the sailors called, “Bring on the kid!”

After the war, the Cunninghams moved back to Pasadena, and David attended Flintridge Preparatory School for a year, before entering The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, and then UC Berkeley, where he affiliated with Alpha Delta Phi.

In 1956 he went to work for his father’s real estate development business, Cunningham Company, Inc. Although there were a couple of company name changes, this was to be where David spent his entire working life.

He had a lifelong fascination with the sky and the sea. He was always an enthusiastic swimmer, and continued his love of the sea as skipper and owner of both sail and power boats. David was both a licensed pilot of small planes and gliders and an amateur student of astronomy.

A popular and sociable man, he was a member of The Valley Hunt Club, the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, and the Bohemian Club. His love of people and parties is further reflected in his active participation in smaller social groups such as the Valley Club, the Waltz Group, and the Supper Club.

Predeceased by his brother, Howard A. Cunningham, and sister, Marie “Sis” Cunningham Jones (Louis), David is survived by seven children: David Cunningham, Jr. (Bailey), Robert Cunningham (Catherine), and Lesley Cunningham (Cyndee Howard), from Beverly (Chappell) Cunningham; Alexandra Hixon Ballard, Sarah Cunningham Wilkinson (Edward), Mollie Cunningham Stikeleather (Scott), and Dan Cunningham (Catherine), from Margaret (Taylor) Cunningham. He leaves thirteen grandchildren.

There will be a service on Saturday, February 10, at noon at All Saints Church, 132N. Euclid Ave., Pasadena, followed by a reception, the details of which will be available at the service.
