Mary Margaret Walesiak Obituary
June 11, 1941 - Aug. 17, 2018With a smile in her heart and a bounty of love for her family and friends, Mary Walesiak of Irvine, passed away peacefully at home after a brave battle with brain cancer. Mary was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Wendell and Evelyn Spear. Her family moved to Santa Paula, California in 1948 where she spent her childhood. Mary attended Santa Paula High School and Ventura Community College. She was a proud graduate of University of La Verne (1963 Homecoming Queen) with a Degree in Education. Always up for a challenge, she taught all grades K-8 during her teaching career. Eventually, she acquired a Master's Degree in Counseling from Azusa Pacific University which led to counseling positions at Las Palmas Intermediate and Covina High School. Consistent with her diverse educational career, she was a District Director for ROP, Work Experience and Special Projects. Mary was married to her husband, Dave, for 54 years. They had two daughters, Laurie Williams (husband, Chris Williams) and Jenny Salberg. She was dedicated to her four grandchildren Rylee (21), Reese (17), CJ (15), and Ashton (14). Upon retirement, Mary volunteered at Alderwood Elementary in Irvine supporting her grandchildren. Affectionately known as "Grandma Mary" to students and staff for her special contributions. Grandma Mary developed close relationships with all who knew her. In 2011, Mary joined the Hoag Hospital Senior Auxiliary Volunteer Team and once again found her home. Mary was active in the Irvine Gift Shop and was a Health Center Greeter. She was also the Coordinator of the Hoag Candy Stripers Scholarship program and served as advisor to the Candy Stripers. She was installed as the President of Hoag Senior Auxiliary for the 2017-2018 term. For her contributions, she was the recipient of the Vin Jorgensen Senior Auxiliary Award. Her contributions were described as "having a heart for youth in our community as well as a heart for volunteering and a ready smile whenever you saw her; her organizational skills were amazing. She exemplifies the spirit of Hoag in all she does. She personified volunteerism in its truest sense." We are a blessed family to have had Mary as our loving wife, mother, grandmother, volunteer, and friend.
