Dr. William Millington, a dynamic education leader and author died in Long Beach at age 85.

Born in Minneapolis, his family moved to California in 1932. Bill attended Long Beach schools and graduated from Jordan High School where he was an outstanding student and excelled in football and track, before serving 2 years in the US Marine Corps. Subsequently Bill attended Long Beach City College, where he was a JC All American halfback and led the Vikings to the 1950 Junior Rose Bowl - their first national championship. Bill earned his BA at Stanford while on a football and boxing scholarship, and master's and doctoral degrees from CSU Long Beach and USC, respectively.

Bill's storied career started at Long Beach Poly High School. He joined LBCC in 1956, rising to Dean and then Vice President. In 1975, Bill joined USC as a higher education professor and provided leadership as department chair in the School of Ed. and in off-campus offices in Washington, D.C., Okinawa, Brussels, and Hawaii's Hickam Air Force Base. Bill was elected to the LBCC Board of Trustees in 1990 and served as President before retiring in 1996. He served on the 1988 Seoul Olympics Advisory Committee for Cultural Affairs and visited Nelson Mandela to help improve colleges in South Africa. He was inducted into the LBCC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975 and the Hall of Champions in 2006.

Dr. Millington was preceded in death by his parents William Millington and Anne Marie (Pompy) Millington of Iowa, sister Elsie Brekke (Oregon), first wife Geri (Long Beach) and third wife Celina (Cypress, CA). He is survived by his children Mindy Hughes (South Carolina), Billy Millington (Oregon), and Lili Keating (Riverside, CA); second wife Jere Millington (Huntington Beach); and Celina's daughters Theresa and Lisa (Cypress, CA). Also survived by brother Richard Millington and Marion Millington (Oroville, CA) and nephews Rick Millington (Danville, CA) and Ted Brekke (Walnut Creek, CA), many grandchildren, and close friends Bob and Vivian Myers of Long Beach.
