Floyd Strong Obituary

Strong, Floyd

Floyd Strong, age 84, of Town of Greenbush, passed away unexpectedly on his 84th birthday (January 31, 2013) while at home in his favorite chair.

Floyd was born on January 31, 1929 in Woodlawn, Town of Nashville WI, a son of the late Henry and Della Swim Strong, raised by his mother and beloved late step-father, Alex Strong.

He attended school in Polar, WI and moved to White Lake graduating from White Lake High School in 1947. Floyd served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1948-1952. On August 20, 1955 he married Bernadine Piper at St. Fridolin Catholic Church in Glenbeulah. The couple has resided in Greenbush for the last 46 years.

Floyd was a self-employed mink farmer and a Captain at the Kettle Moraine Correctional Institute for many years, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Elkhart Lake. He belonged to the Greenbush American Legion Post #261, serving in all the offices, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus #1789 in Plymouth. He was also long time member of Green/Glen Lions Club. It was important that these organizations stay viable that he built two Grills/Chicken Rotisseries for fund raisers and was at every event grilling brats or roasting chicken.

Floyd was an avid fisherman- he loved fishing with sons and grandsons. His favorite "fishing holes "were at the family cottage in Door County and "Up North" in White Lake. He also enjoyed golfing, woodworking and was a sports enthusiast. Floyd was a regular at his grandchildren's sporting events, school events, and dance recitals. He rarely missed having breakfast with his breakfast buddies. But most of all, he loved his family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years: Bernadine, Town of Greenbush, Seven children: Kate (Al) Vitale of Oostburg, Patty (Tom) Mauer of Gibbsville, Mary (Jim) Eick of Plymouth, Mike Strong (Special friend: Wendy) of Chilton, Dick (Sunday) Strong of Plymouth, Suzy (Patrick) Gossage of Green Bay and Kris (Todd) Daehnert of Sheboygan.

Thirteen grandchildren: Justin (Anita) Kohlhagen, Jake (Nycol) Kohlhagen, Steven and Patrick Mauer, Lee (Christy) Eick, Joe Eick, Brian (Ashley) Eick, Caleb and Hayley Strong, Cody and Spencer Strong and Alex and Brooke Gilbert. Four great grandchildren: Axl, Isabella, Grant and Arianna and two great grandchildren on the way.

Two sisters: Jackie (John) Nickolai and Judy (Jim) Popelka both of White Lake. Two sister-in-laws: Loretta Strong of White Lake and Mary Nelson of Arizona. One Brother-In-Law: Tom Piper of Florida. Floyd is survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father: Alex Strong; one brother: Walter; one brother-in-law: Terry Piper and his father and mother-in-law: Bernard and Frances Piper.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday Evening (Feb. 5) at 6:30 P.M. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church in Elkhart Lake. Father Dan Volkert, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Aquinas South Cemetery in Greenbush. Friends may call at the CHURCH in the Resurrection Chapel from 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday until the time of services.

The Greenbush American Legion Post # 261 will conduct military rites at church following the mass on Tuesday Evening. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Floyd's name.

I am extremely sadden to hear of your loss. I had just talked with Floyd the other day, during a fire inspection at the Legion Hall in Greenbush. We always had good talks about the Legion and other things. I will miss that. Sometimes we don't always know what God have in store for us, but we fall on our faith at times like these.
God Bless,
Bill & Beth Lagacy
