Oostburg - Herbert Jack Hengst, 87, of Oostburg, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2019, at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice with his family by his side.

Herb was born on June 10, 1931, in the Town of Wilson, to William and Elizabeth (Oppeneer) Hengst and attended Oostburg School. Herb served his country in the U.S. Army from 1952 until 1954.

On October 14, 1954, Herb married Carol J. Schreurs in Town of Holland. Herb worked at Daane Hardware, Ferrellgas, and enjoyed working after his retirement for Dirkse & Huibregtse for many years.

Herb was a faithful member of First Reformed Church of Oostburg, the Oostburg American Legion, and was a charter member of the Pine Beach Boat Club. He enjoyed wood working, gardening, spending the winter in Florida, spending time with family and caring for others.

Herb is survived by his wife, Carol Hengst of Oostburg; daughter, Beth (Dale) Wingert of Sheboygan Falls; son, Lee (Debbie) Hengst of Oostburg;; five Grandchildren, Lisa (Adam) Petras, Laura (Michael) Weigel, Erin (Alex) Knipp, Emily Hengst, Dean (fiancé, Amanda) Wingert; four great-grandchildren, Natalie, Ben, Addi, Jack; brother, Marvin G. (Carol) Hengst of Oostburg, brother-in-law, Alan Schreurs.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents William & Elizabeth Hengst; two brothers, Leonard (Dorothy) Hengst, James (Joyce, Elaine) Hengst; sister, Toots; two sister-in-laws, Arline (Wes) Van Driest, Helen (LaMont) Bruggink; brother-in-law, Harvey (Betty) Schreurs.

A funeral service to celebrate Herb's life will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 11:00 am at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg with Rev. Bob Rook officiating. Burial will take place at Union Cemetery in the Town of Holland.

Relatives and friends may greet the family at church on Monday 9:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am.

A memorial fund is being established in his name for First Reformed Church of Oostburg and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.
