Larry Kooi Obituary

Kooi, Larry Dean

Larry Dean Kooi, Ringgold, GA, passed away on April 30, 2015, as a result of an automobile accident near Mauston, WI. He and his wife of 47 years, Gail (Schaap) Kooi, were on their way to Minnesota to visit their kids and grandkids when the accident occurred.

Larry Kooi was born on July 29, 1946, to Lewis B. and Tillie (Vanden Bosch) Kooi, of Rock Valley, IA. He is survived by his wife and his mother; by son, Michael Don of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Heidi Lynn (Justin) Dierking of Blaine, MN; and son, James Calvin (Tracy) Kooi, of Ringgold, GA; as well as his grandchildren, Max, Luke, and Tessa Dierking, and Levi and Jonah Kooi.

Also surviving are four brothers, Art (Judy) Kooi of Hull, IA; Roger (Carol) Kooi of Valley Springs, SD; Darrel (Marlene) Kooi of Harrisburg, SD; and Wendall (Sandy) Kooi of Inwood, IA; and one sister-in-law, Jean Wood of Sioux Falls, SD.

Larry's other in-laws include Darrell and Judy Hoffmann of Oostburg, WI; and Jim and Barbara Schaap, of Alton, IA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis B. Kooi, and an older brother, Donald.

Larry was born in Rock Valley, IA, attended local Christian schools and Dordt College, Sioux Center, IA, before marrying Gail Jean Schaap on June 8, 1968, and moving to South Holland, IL, where he taught middle school social studies. After six years, the Kooi family moved to Sheboygan, WI, where he taught history at Sheboygan County Christian High and moved into administration.

As a greatly admired and much beloved administrator, Larry then served Christian schools in Lake Worth, FL; Huntsville, AL; and Annapolis, MD.

After retirement Larry and Gail moved to Ringgold, GA, where he continued to advise Christian schools and mentor Christian school leaders across the country. His life was devoted to a family who loved him dearly and to the cause of Christian education.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, a beloved father and grandfather, and a wise and considerate teacher and administrator to literally hundreds, even thousands of students, teachers, and staff. His own occasionally difficult teenage years taught him the value of grace and compassion.

Testimonies to his thoughtful leadership keep coming to the family.

Funeral and memorial services are pending as his wife, Gail, recovers from her injuries.

Memorial gifts should be sent to Zuni Christian Mission School, Zuni, NM, http://www.zunichristianmission.org/donate, or Hope for the Inner City, Chattanooga, TN http://www.hope4theinnercity.org/donations.

Larry was beyond a doubt the absolute best leader I have ever worked with. His passing is a tremendous loss for his family, friends, and Christian education. May God bless his loved ones with peace and strength as they deal with this bittersweet time. Until we meet again, may we draw inspiration from his legacy.

Our sincere condolences to Mr. Kooi's family. Our prayers for Mrs. Kooi's recovery. He led AACS forward with the addition of the Upper School campus and all of those he touched with his belief and love for Christian schools.

Mr. Kooi touched thousands of lives at AACS alone. He had a vision to form our into not only an excellent school, but a community. He left the school's daily life only a few years ago, and left an enduring mark that we will remember.

Such a godly man. I remember when we had the farewell for Gail - he was so glad that she was highlighted for all of her years of service. You are in our prayers Gail.
