Tom Blackburn Obituary
Shelby-- Dr. Thomas Reid Blackburn of Shelby, died July 22, 2018 due to complications of multiple myeloma, at Wendover Hospice House. He was born in 1939 the son of Reid and Kate Blackburn of Mooresboro, N.C.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, by his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Stacey Blackburn of Rock Hill, SC and Paul and Kim Blackburn of Lexington, SC; and by his four grandchildren Kaitlyn and Hannah Blackburn of Rock Hill and Wesley and William Blackburn of Lexington. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Dr. Robert and Rose Blackburn of Boiling Springs, NC and nieces Dr. Barbara Hale, Rebecca Williams and Brenda Morrison.
Tom graduated summa cum laude from Wake Forest College in 1961 where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He then graduated from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest in 1965, and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, honorary medical society. After completing his internship at Hartford (Connecticut) Hospital, Tom and Barbara married and lived for 2 years in Palau, Western Caroline Islands where Dr. Blackburn was on the Peace Corps staff on assignment from the US Public Health Service.
Dr. Blackburn returned home to Cleveland County where he worked with Dr. Wyan Washburn and Dr. Gene Washburn in Boiling Springs. He then went to Atlanta to complete a residency and fellowship at Emory University in diagnostic radiology.
In 1974 Dr. Blackburn joined Dr. William Story and Dr. Lamar Harrell in Shelby for the practice of diagnostic radiology. Dr. Blackburn was a member of Shelby Radiological Associates until his retirement in 2000. He continued to do locum tenens work in radiology primarily with Blue Ridge Radiology in Morganton and Lincolnton until 2012.
He was a past chief-of-staff of Cleveland Memorial Hospital and a past president of the Cleveland County Medical Society. He several terms as chairman of the Department of Radiology at Cleveland Memorial and Kings Mountain Hospitals. He was a member of the North Carolina Medical Society, the American College of Radiology, the North Carolina Radiological Society, and the Radiological Society of North America. He was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church.
Tom was a longtime fan of Wake Forest athletics and the Boston Red Sox. He also enjoyed sailing on Lake Norman for many years.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and a deeply caring physician.
Dr. Blackburn's family wishes to thank Dr. Ward Woodard, Dr. David Hurd, Dr. Saad Usmani, Dr. Calvin Caunt, Dr. Forrest Thompson and their staffs for their dedicated medical care during his illness. Also the family thanks the staff of Wendover Hospice House for their care and comfort.
A memorial service for Dr. Blackburn will be on Thursday July 26 at 2 P.M. at Shelby Presbyterian Church. Following the service the family will greet friends in the fellowship hall.
