John Gus Cosse
SHREVEPORT, LA-John Gus Cosse passed away at home on July 21, 2013, at the age of 84, surrounded by his family. There will be a visitation from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home located at 1815 Marshall Street. A Trisagion service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2013, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church located at 1719 Creswell. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery located on Stoner Avenue. Father Jason Foster will officiate.
Mr. Cosse was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 17, 1928, to Gus and Kalliope Cosse. He was a 1945 graduate of C.E. Byrd High School. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Centenary College of Louisiana in 1949 and his Master's in Education from The University of Houston in 1951. Upon graduation, he joined the family business of Farmers Seafood Company, Inc., where he was co-owner and Vice President. Mr. Cosse was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church where he served numerous times as President of its Parish Council. He was also a member of The Order of Ahepa - Chapter # 8 where he will be honored for 50 years of service, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Elks Club and East Ridge Country Club.
Mr. Cosse was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by the love of his life and his wife of 59 years, Christine Cavalaris Cosse. He is also survived by his loving daughters, Connie Cosse Mitchell and husband Dr. George Mitchell, of Vero Beach, Florida, Sophia Cosse Kastanos and husband John, of Shreveport and Tina Cosse of Shreveport; brother, Dr. James G. Cosse and wife Fani; brother, Dr. Spiro Cosse and wife Nancy; grandchildren, Andrew Kastanos and fiancé Maris Emanuel, Jonathan Kastanos and wife Mignon, Dena Kastanos and fiancé Nathan Smith, Rene Mitchell and Anthony Mitchell; and his great-grandchild, Jack Kastanos and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Cosse was known for his kind and gentle spirit and for always having a smile on his face. He had a passion for cooking and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his family.
Honoring Mr. Cosse as pallbearers will be Andrew Kastanos, Jonathan Kastanos, Anthony Mitchell, Dr. Chris Cosse, Sammy Mijalis, Johnny Mijalis, Jimmy Mijalis, Johnny Peroulas and Steven Booras. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Alex Booras, Foster Campbell, Dr. John Davis, Roy Dickerson, Bill Dowden, Andrew Kastanos, Joe LeSage, Gus Mijalis, Ernest Palmisano, Kerry Phillips, Nathan Smith, Emanuel Stravolemos, Dan Swearingin, Byrum Teekell, John Theo and Pete Theo.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. George Greek Orthodox, 1719 Creswell, Shreveport, LA 71101.
