Phillip Hurxthal Butcher

Bossier City, LA - Phillip Hurxthal Butcher died Wednesday, December 4, 2013. He was born February 14, 1937 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. In 1939 his family moved to Shreveport. From early school days and through high school, Phillip excelled at athletics. While attending St. Andrews School in Middletown, Delaware, he received varsity letters in track, football, basketball and baseball. His passion was everything about golf. After one year at University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps. He returned to Shreveport and graduated from Centenary College where he was a member of Kappa Alpha order. He later was an active member of the Humane Society. His first job was as an investigative reporter for Dunn & Bradstreet covering the New Orleans French Quarter. He later moved to Little Rock, AR to manage the office of Robert K. Butcher & Associates. Phillip participated in many golf tournaments throughout the state of Arkansas and Louisiana; winning his share.

He is predeceased by his parents Robert K. & Joanna S. Butcher, and special dog Franko. He is survived by his twin brother, John K. Butcher and his wife Kay.

A memorial service will be held at Church of The Holy Cross on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 11:00 AM with interment in the adjoining Rose Garden following the service.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Phillip Hurxthal Butcher our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Phillip. And to Phillip it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Phillip, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, Generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Phillip's family and loved ones.
