Carolyn Querbes Nelson

Carolyn Querbes Nelson passed away May 1, 2013 at home after a long battle with depression.

Carolyn was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, daughter of Nell Querbes Nelson and George Dalman Nelson. She attended Southfield School, C.E.Byrd High School, Sophie Newcomb College at Tulane University, and received her Masters in Art History from the University of Texas. She was an ardent patron of the arts in all forms.

Services will be held on Monday, May 6, 2013. Burial will be at 4:00pm at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Ave. Memorial services will be held at 5:00pm at St. Mark's Cathedral, 908 Rutherford Street, Shreveport, LA. Officiating will be Dr. Rowena White and Rev. Mary Richard, with a reception following in the Garden Room of the Ministry Center at St. Mark's.

She is survived by her brother, George D. Nelson, Jr. and sister-in-law Clare Morgan Nelson, and their four children, George D. Nelson, III, Catherine Tucker Nelson, Carolyn Morgan Nelson, and Spencer Reynolds Nelson, her aunts, Diane Nelson and Johnette McCullough; first cousins, Justin Ricou Querbes, III, Claiborne Robinson Querbes, Katherine Querbes Blewett, Johnette Querbes Barnes, Ann Querbes McRae, Allen David Nelson, Felicia Nelson Baker, Clay Harry Nelson and all of their spouses and children. She leaves behind many devoted friends too numerous to name, an ex-spouse in Carl Liberto, and her schnauzer, Coco.

Carolyn had a 25 year career as Managing Director at Querbes & Nelson, which she recently honored with a sidewalk star at the Robinson Film Center in celebrating the firm's 100th anniversary. She was an officer and board member of Louisiana Companies and Life Insurance Company of Louisiana.

She just completed her term as Chair of the Women's Endowment Quorum at Centenary and served on the boards of the Shreveport Art Guild, the Shreveport Regional Arts Council, the Shreveport Club, The New Orleans Museum of Art, Downtown Shreveport Unlimited, Goodwill Industries, The Independent Insurance Agents of Louisiana, The Community Foundation of Shreveport-Bossier, Shreveport Symphony, YMCA, Feist-Weiller Cancer Center at LSU Health Science Center Shreveport, The Biomedical Research Foundation, and The Friends of the Meadows Museum of which she was the founding curator.

Honoring Carolyn as pallbearers will be Laura Butler, Debbie Hall, Martha Ilgenfritz Harris, Fran Strange Hewitt, Susan Young, Sara Luster, Laura Nanda, Shane Shehee, Catherine Sturgis, Minette Thornton, and Martha Whitehead.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Winburn Curlin, O. Delton Harrison, Jr., Dorothy Gwin, Kirk D. Thomas, and Judith Werner.

In lieu of flowers, she would be honored by a gift in her memory to any interest shared with her. Suggestions include the George D. Nelson, Sr. Professorship or Meadows Museum at Centenary College, the Robinson Film Center, Southfield School, St. Mark's Cathedral, or the Community Foundation of Shreveport-Bossier.
