Camille Conrad Despot Obituary
Camille Conrad Despot

Shreveport - Camille Conrad Despot, a resident of Shreveport, Louisiana passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018.

Camille was born in Shreveport on November 2, 1929, at the old Highland Hospital, to Katie and George Despot who had immigrated to the U.S. from Trpanj, Croatia in 1919. He attended St. John's High School (name changed to Jesuit and now Loyola). He then attended Oklahoma University at which he completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Geology. Following serving time in the Navy during the Korean War, he enjoyed over 60 years, many with his brother George, of a very successful career in the oil and gas exploration business. One of his better discoveries was in South Louisiana in 1965, the Manchac Field near Baton Rouge, a major discovery that is still producing today.

In 1954, he married Raynelle S. Despot and they raised six children on Cross Lake with boats, horses, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, snakes and other wildlife. Lots of work, but what a unique place to have provided for his kids to grow up. His daughter and sons now live in four Southern states and will remember him as a very hard-working man, that did not back down, ever, for anyone or anything. Later in life, he met and married Virginia Conlin and she has been an invaluable partner in his second phase of life. It is not often that you find a partner, later in life, that has the chemistry to make it work, but they had it, and she has supported him all along the path.

Camille never met a stranger. He always had a twinkle in his eye. We will miss him.

Camille is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Mary Virginia Conlin Despot and her parents, Wanda Conlin and Don Boren, Ft Worth, TX; one daughter, Dana N. Despot, Sarasota, FL; five sons, Braden C. Despot and his wife, Renee, Lafayette, LA; Mark L. Despot and his wife, Lynn, Lafayette, LA; Justin G. Despot, Conway, AR; Christian D. Despot, Birmingham, AL; Daniel R. Despot and his wife, Jacki, Birmingham, AL. Additionally, he is survived by 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Pearla Despot and Sherlee Despot; and 5 nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Katie and George Despot; two older brothers, George Despot and Gregory Despot, who were business partners and life-long friends; his first wife, Raynelle S. Despot; and his brother-in-law, James Conlin.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at Osborn Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow for family and friends from 3:30 until 6:30 pm at the Petroleum Club of Shreveport (valet parking provided).
