Ringgold - Funeral services for Herbert Lewis Sams, 78, of Ringgold, LA will be held Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. in Ringgold First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Harry'O Brown. Burial will follow in Springhill Cemetery, Ringgold, LA. Visitation will be Friday, August 10, 2018 from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Rockett Funeral Home, Ringgold, LA.

Herb was born on September 20, 1939 in Parkersburg, West Virginia and died August 8, 2018 in Shreveport, LA. After growing up and graduating school in Parkersburg, WV, he joined the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Anchorage, AK and eventually at Barksdale Air Force Base.

He was thoughtful, kind hearted and loved the Lord. He served as a deacon and in the choir for many years at First Baptist Church, Ringgold, LA. Herb loved to travel and after he retired, he and Joy drove to Alaska and also traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and many other places in the United States. He was an active community leader and he and his wife were honored as the Ringgold Slabtown Festival Grand Marshalls. At Christmas, Herb made candy cane wreaths out of soft peppermints for each church family and many other friends. He was known as "Pop" to his grandchildren and loved being a part of their many activities.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Catherine Sams and a sister, Janet Kress.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Joy Tipton Sams of Ringgold, LA; sons, Judge Lewis O. Sams and wife, Laura of Coushatta, LA and Dr. Brad Sams and wife, Dr. Sheli Sams of Ocean Springs, MS; grandchildren, Dr. Hanna Sams, John Lewis Sams, Peyton Christopher Sams, and Avery Catherine Sams; sisters, Evelyn Perkins and Linda Fenk; his beloved dog, DeDe and a number of other relatives and friends.
