I will miss Mr. Waggonnnr. He was very much a part of Louisiana governmnet when I was in school.
In fact, I believe he spoke at the school I attended in Minden.
May God's peace be with his family.

Carol Jean,
I wanted so much to represent my family at your dad's funeral, but I was with my daddy at the War Veteran's Home as he lay taking his last breaths. We lost him on his 89th birthday, Oct. 11. He thought so much of Joe and had the utmost respect for him. They were childhood friends in Plain Dealing. I'd like to think that Joe D. Waggoner, Jr. and Ray M. Hilburn are having a wonderful reunion in Heaven! God be with us.

May God continue to be with the Waggonner family. In days to come may you have blessed assurance that many are thinking of you. I learned of Congressman Waggonner from my grandmother, Clara Jackson and my aunt, Sally Clay both of Plain Dealing. They once worked for the family. I now serve as a senior staffer for U S Sen Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and my cuz worked closely on NASA projects and National Security. People from Plain Dealing continue to serve the nation.

I met Mr. Waggoner while I was employed at Bossier Bank & Trust in the early 80's. I loved him. He always called me Ft. Worth (my name is Dallas). I had the pleasure also of working one summer w/ yall's neice. I'm sorry I can remember her name, but she is probably in her early 40's. She was fun too! I moved to Dallas, TX and my grandmother Braider Barnes called and told me he had passes away since she knew I was very fond of him. I'm sorry for your loss. I know he will be greatly missed by many.

To the family of Joe D. Waggonner, Jr.
I was President of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at LaTech in the mid 1980's. Whenever I needed guidance I called upon Mr. Waggonner. I knew what a busy schedule he must have had but without hesitation he always took my call or personal visit and spent as much time as I needed. I enjoyed his candor and his history lessons to me. He truly loved our state and I was honored to have had his guidance. We have lost a great citizen and mentor. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Roland Dartez

Joe D. was a very good friend to all of us in north La. We in the UAW will always remeber Joe as one of the reasons we have our GM plant in Shreveport. Joe told me one time that teamwork is the only way to go. I will always remeber the encouragement he gave to me and the wonderful phone calls I received from him. I just thank God above that Joe was my friend and a friend to all.
Rest in Peace Congressman Joe,

The "Plain Dealer from Plain Dealing" set a high standard for public service. He was never above the people who elected him and he proved it over and over. At a state function, I introduced my 8-year old daughter to him. After that every letter I received from him included a handwritten note to my daughter, by name. ABC News once refered to him during the Nixon Years as the most influential Democrat in Washington. No doubt he was but he would never claim that.

My deepest sympathy and prayers are with you at this time. Joe will be missed by thousands and I am proud to be among them. I always felt in awe of "Congressman Waggonner" when I was growing up in Plain Dealing. He always knew us by name and never forgot his small hometown when he was away from home.
I missed seeing Joe at church the last time I was in Plain Dealing.
God bless you and may you all know that a star shines above for this great man.

My family moved to Plain Dealing in 1967. Then years later after graduation my family, Daniel and Amanda Sanders, and I moved away in 1978. I had a teacher in the younger years named Jackie Cox. It seems I remember her father was Joe Waggonner but I am not sure. I remember her house burned and she lost her husband. My former in-laws, Minnie and Chester Sanders, had great respect for Mr. Waggonner. My thoughts are with you during this sad time.

Carol Jean and Family (Billy Tom, Elizabeth, and Sarah),
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of grief, reflection, and celebration of a wonderful man and a life well-lived. Reading the Shreveport Times this morning, I realized how much more he has given to our state and its people than you have ever spoken of, CJ. WONDERFUL man, WONDERFUL family. He will be remembered for the way he lived a life of service; his legacy will be a reminder to us of the significant difference he made in the lives of so many in Louisiana. May God's love give you renewed strength and peaceful moments today and in the days to come. Our love and deepest sympathy.

Mary Ruth, Carol Jean & David,
Not only have you lost a great husband & father, our community has lost a great hero!! I remember him as a very kind man. Occasionally over the years I would run into him in Plain Dealing or other places and I always made a point to greet him. Another long-ago memory is that he would always wait until he was back in town so he could bring his cars to my dad, Arthur Spears, for wheel alignment and balancing. My mom and dad, who have both been gone for a while now, always spoke fondly of him. As a youngster, I remember being in Shreveport and my parents and I were approached by someone who was running against him. My parents made it clear that we were for Joe Waggonner!!
My sincere condolences to all of you.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Congressman Joseph David Waggonner, Jr. our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Joe. And to Joe it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II and the Korean War while serving in the U.S. Navy. We also greatly appreciate his outstanding and loyal service to the citizens of Northwest Louisiana while serving as Congressman for the Fourth Congressional District. Joe we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,355 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Congressman Waggonner’s family and loved ones.
