Shreveport - Dr. Spiro Gus Cosse passed away on Thursday, November 1st, 2018 at the age of 79. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, November 7th 2018 from 5 to 7 PM at Osborn Funeral Home, 3631 Southern Avenue, Shreveport, LA followed by a Trisagion service. The celebration of the life of Dr. Cosse will be Thursday, November 8th at 11 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1719 Creswell Street, interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, 130 E. Stoner Avenue. Reverend Father Ioannis Krokos will be officiating.

Spiro was born November 20, 1938 in Shreveport, LA to Gus and Kalliope Cosse. He graduated from Byrd High School where he lettered in football and track, and was selected to the All State teams in both. He was undefeated in the state of Louisiana his senior year in the discus, setting the Triple A District and State records, also winning in the discus at the Meet of Champions in New Orleans which brought together all of the different classes of high schools into one competitive event. He was inducted into the C.E. Byrd Sports Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Spiro attended college at Texas A&M where he played football under Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. He attended Tulane University where he continued his football career. He graduated from Centenary College and then attended Loyola Dental School (now LSU School of Dentistry) and went into the specialty of Orthodontics.

After serving in the United States Navy as a dentist with the Marines in Vietnam, he returned to Shreveport to open his orthodontic practice. Spiro was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church where he served on the Parish Council. He was also a member of the AHEPA. Spiro has been a member of the American Dental Society, The Louisiana Dental Society, the Shreveport Dental Society, the American Association of Orthodontists and the Louisiana Association of Orthodontists.

Dr. Cosse was a loyal and faithful friend, father, grandfather and husband. He was an incredible man. He was a man of integrity, cute wit and loved to make people laugh…and he gave the best hugs!

Although he had many awards and accolades, he was most proud of his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, John Gus Cosse and James Gus Cosse. Dr. Cosse is survived by his wife Nancy Pfeiffer Cosse; children, Marianne Cosse Boston , Christopher Constantine Cosse (Stacy), Catherine Cosse McInnis (Roger); grandchildren, Maggie Boston, John Hollis Boston, Athan Cosse, Michael Cosse, Kalli Cosse, Stefan Cosse, Emma Claire McInnis, Eleni McInnis and Gray McInnis; his sister-in-laws, Christine Cosse, Fani Cosse and Susan Dotson (Wayne); nieces, Connie Cosse Mitchell (George), Sophia Cosse Kastanos (John), Tina Cosse, CiCi Crain Shelton (Will), Allison Crain Hammer (Greg) and Heather Richardson.

Honoring Dr. Cosse as Pallbearers are Nathan Barrow, Andrew Kastanos, Jonathan Kastanos, Alexander Mijalis, Andrew Mijalis, Dean Mijalis, Anthony Mitchell, Nathan Smith.

Honorary Pallbearers are Robert Allen, Sammy Booras, Dr. Edward Brown, Dr. William Bundrick, Charles Clawson, Don Davis, Wayne Dotson, Reverend Father Jason Foster, John Georgiafandis, Dr. Robert Haley, Greg Hammer, Bill Houchin, Tom Kelly (godson), Dr. James Lang, Dr. Joseph Lattier, Charles Malachias, Jimmy Mijalis, Johnny Mijalis, Sammy Mijalis, Dr. George Mitchell, Dr. Larry Phillips, Richard Sale, William Shelton, Dr. Jeffrey Silmon, James Stamos, and John Theo.

Grant rest eternal in blessed repose, O Lord, to Thy servant Spiro who has fallen asleep, and make his memory eternal.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
