Dr. J.G. Tharpe (Bro. Jimmy, Mr. Baptist, Papa)
Shreveport, LA- On November 25th, Dr. Jimmy Tharpe heard the sweet, soft voice of the Lord saying "Come home, Jimmy, well done thy good and faithful servant."
Services celebrating the life of Dr. Jimmy G. Tharpe will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Baptist Tabernacle. Officiating will be Rev. Jon Isbell, pastor of the church, assisted by Bro. Bill Kincaid and Bro. Johnny Ramsey. Interment will follow in Forest Park West Cemetery assisted by Bro. Mike Landry. The family will receive friends and loved ones on Friday evening between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the church. Bro. Jimmy was born in Sibley, LA on May 12, 1930 to Lester and Fern Tharpe.
Bro. Jimmy was a giant for his family, church, and God. His main purpose in life was to bring lost souls to Christ. He never lost sight of his purpose. A visionary, his ministry began in 1952, organizing and pastoring Trinity Baptist in Doyline, LA. In 1956, he was called to Baptist Tabernacle where he served as a loving pastor for 47 years until retirement. He held 4 earned degrees and 10 honorary degrees including a PH.D from National Christian University. In 1978, he was inducted into the Preacher's Hall of Fame. Dr. Tharpe was the founder of Baptist Christian College, Baptist Christian Academy and Louisiana Baptist University. His vision was instrumental in sending out over 75 Baptist churches. He is a nationally known educator, pastor, and evangelist. With each achievement, his precious wife, Edith, was supporting him.
Dr. Tharpe was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Dr. Edith Tharpe, his one true love; his parents and his little sister, Bonnie Lee. He is survived by his children, Kathy Martin and husband, Phil, Sharon Stevens and husband, Al, Jimmy G. Tharpe, Jr. and wife, Kim, Debbye Langley and husband, Greg, Roger Tharpe and wife, Karen, and Brenda Scott and husband, Paul; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and brothers, George N. Tharpe and wife, Darlene, and Jack D. Tharpe and wife, Barbara.
Serving as pallbearers will be his 10 grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Baptist Tabernacle.
