Cousin John was generous to all of his family. He personally helped me with a difficult issue concerning my mother's estate. Although complications in my own family prevented travel to honor his family personally, we were deeply saddened to hear of his passing, and his family remains in our prayers.
With much Love

Dear Sue,
Peggy and I were saddened to hear of John's passing. John and I graduated together from North Caddo High. He and I were best of friends. We attended Pelican Boy's State together and were in the band together. John was a true friend. I enjoyed visiting with him at High School Reunions.
Sue, our prayers are with you and David during your time of sorrow. May John rest in Peace. Well Done.

As a paralegal I came in contact with Judge Ballard on a professional level and actually had a standing joke between us about his robe. He later had his office around the corner from where I worked so we spoke on many occasions. He was always very kind and had time to speak and say hello when I saw him. I'm sure he will be missed by many.

Sue,
Nancy and I were saddened to hear of John's passing and are praying for you and the entire family. We have fond memories of you and John and the relationship forged during our seven years in Shreveport. John was a highly respected lawyer and could be counted on to do what he said he would do. I loved his candor.

Sue -
Such sad news about Judge Ballard! He was one of the most genuinely kind men I have ever known, and working for him was the absolute highlight of my career. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

John Richard was one of the most selfless men I have ever known. He was always thinking of others. When Dad (John Richard's Uncle Frank) died, he took care of practically everything for me. His brother Pete also was a great help. I tried to thank him and he said, When Dad died (my Uncle John), I promised him I would take care of the family - he meant ALL of the family. During our last phone conversation a couple of weeks ago (just before he entered the hospital), he expressed concern for Rick's and my safety as we build our home. He said, Be careful when you are working with electricity. It can be dangerous!
Although my exposure to John Richard was more limited than I would have liked, I knew him to be a Psalm 1:1-3 man.
One of the marks of a great man is his humility. John Richard was well known throughout the Shreveport vicinity and Broadmoor Baptist Church; yet there will only be private graveside services on Wednesday. I feel sure that was his request. He wouldn't have wanted to have a big fuss.
I was privileged to call him cousin. I look forward to seeing him again - our blessed hope in Jesus!

Dear Sue,
Sue Ellen and I send.our love and sympathy to you and your family. We regret that we haven't kept in closer contact in recent years, but we have some wonderful memories from the Batot Rouge days, like the hurricane of "63" and Saturday golf with John and Lacy Davis at City Park.
We know that John has no more pain, and our prayer is that God will give you love, comfort and support in the days to come.
With our love,
John R. and Sue Ellen

The Final Salute
Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to John R. Smith our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for John. And to John it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Vietnam War while serving in the Judicial Branch of the U.S. Army. John, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,061 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to John's family and loved ones.
