Francis Kalmbach Obituary

Francis Terrell Kalmbach

Francis Terrell Kalmbach, 80, died Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at his home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, following a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Chase Kalmbach and Ellen Terrell Kalmbach; his brother William Chase Kalmbach, Jr.; his brother and sister-in-law, Vernon Terrell Kalmbach and Carolyn Kalmbach; and his longtime partners, Bob Bourland and Harry Kessler Wright. Francis is survived by his four children and their families: Francis Terrell Kalmbach, Jr., his wife, Lynne DiPol Kalmbach, and children Ashley, Rebecca, Ellen, Elizabeth and Robert Kalmbach; Ellen Kalmbach Tizian and her husband, Carl Heinz Tizian, along with their children Christopher Tizian, Susan Tizian Schmidt and husband Sebastian, Caroline Tizian, and Julian Tizian; Lewis Kilbourne Forrester Kalmbach and husband Greg Ott, and their son, Jasper Kalmbach Ott; and Samuel Atkinson Kalmbach, wife Leslie Idom Kalmbach, and children Sam and Madeline Kalmbach; several great-grandchildren, his former wife, Susan Forrester Roberts; his sister-in-law, Sally Kalmbach; and many nieces and nephews. Francis also left behind numerous extended family members and many close friends who fondly referred to him as "Paco".

Born on November 4, 1935 and raised in Shreveport, Francis lived for over 40 years in the artist colony of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He attended Sewanee Military Academy, Washington and Lee University, Louisiana State University, and Tulane University where he received a degree in architecture. He worked as an architect in Shreveport before turning to a successful career pursuing his art.

Francis was a talented artist, and his true passion was painting. He devoted much of his life to creating beautiful impressionist works, many featuring children. His paintings were shown across the South and many hang in the homes of art-loving Shreveport friends. He was personable, witty, an animal lover and extremely well-traveled, finding inspiration for his paintings in the beautiful places he visited.

In accordance with his wishes, no funeral services will be held. The family suggests memorials to the Philadelphia Center or Robinson's Rescue.

Lewis, we are so sorry to hear of your fathers death. Paco was so loved by every member of our family. He always lit up a room when we were with him, in Atlanta, Paris, San Miguel, Shreveport or Gulf Shores, AL. I remember all the good times we had and will forever be grateful to have know him.
One of my favorite times with him was when I dressed up as a mammy and he painted me on the door at his ranch outside of San Miguel.
He is at peace now and I only can wait to find out what Heaven is like. He will be joining some fabulous people.
We love you. Kay Marsden Gilpin and family.

Your dad was always a gentleman - even wearing his ubiquitous checkered shirts!
He had a ready smile and was very generous. When we were about to remodel our first San Miguel home, he took time to come look it over and give his advice. We barely knew one another at that time.
Gary and I are so happy to have this oil painting - it makes us smile, as he did.

What a truly kind person he was! He always had a smile on his face and a kind word. The world was a better place because of him. Rest in peace. Leslie Cohen (San Miguel de Allende)

To all the family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Paco was a dear friend of over 40 years and the principal reason I now call San Miguel de Allende home. He was a perpetually positive person and always shared the delights of life with all around him. It was impossible to be anything but enthusiastic when in his company. He never met a stranger and when he did they soon became friends! What a life he led.

Paco was such a sweetheart, such a kind dear person. We will miss him so, Judy McKay and Charles Rutherford.

My family and I are very sorry to hear of Mr. Kalmbach's passing. He worked with my father William S Wilson in his architecture firm. Francis inspired me in my own pursuit of my business as a photographer. He once asked me, "Do you know why there are walls? They were meant to hang art." I will surely miss him on our trips to San Miguel.
