Margaret A. Winton

Margaret A. Winton Local teacher Margaret Anne Winton, a retired New York City school teacher who taught generations of Staten Island children and who was a lover of thoughtful conversation, died Monday, May 24 after a long illness. She was 84. Born in New York City to Stephanie and Thomas Winton, Ms. Winton lived in Staten Island her entire life. A graduate of Hunter College, she was fluent in German. Her career focused on elementary school education, especially mathematics. She was a parishioner at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church. She was proud of her family's heritage, both of her father's service in the Canadian military and her mother's family homesteading legacy that traced back to Polish immigrants. She loved having spirited debates about current events and politics, and kept abreast of national and international news. She was especially fond of the area around Three Lakes, Wisconsin, the town her mother was born in, and asked that she be buried there. Her brother, John M. Winton, died in 1998. She is survived by two nephews and two nieces, Anthony Winton, of Key Biscayne Fla., Daniel Winton, of Boca Raton Fla., Elizabeth Fortunato of Pomona, N.Y. and Stephanie Winton of Middletown, N.Y. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, 10 Austin Place, Staten Island. A wake is being held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave.
