From 1955 to 1959, John was a member of the British Royal Air Force where he served in the intelligence branch with the secret service. After finishing his military service, John worked in administration at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham from 1960 to 1966.
In 1966, John accepted a position in Montreal with Collectors Research Limited. He later worked as a freelance researcher and numismatic historian. John and Margaret came to Sidney, Ohio, in 1975, joining the staff at Amos Press at the personal request of J. Oliver Amos. John and Margaret founded the Birmingham Numismatic Society. John enjoyed the study and translation of languages including Russian, Arabic, Turkish, German, French, Greek and Chinese. John collected books on coins, languages and history. Other interests were calligraphy and art.
John and Margaret helped initiate the building project for the new county animal shelter and have been supporters of Shelby County Animal Rescue Foundation (S.C.A.R.F.) for many years.

My wife, Sherrie Casad-Lodge, and I were saddened to hear that John Humphris has passed away. He and his wife, Margaret, were good friends as they were both English emigrants to Canada who eventually moved to the United States. I am a former 1961 English emigrant to Sidney and given our similar backgrounds (including working for Amos Press), we became friends. I later learned that John had served with the British Royal Air Force in Egypt in 1955-1959 during the Suez Canal Crisis when Britain, France and Israel invaded Egypt across from Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. In 1958-1960, I, too, was in the British Royal Air Force on the island of Cyprus during a war with EOKA terrorists who wanted to merge the Greek/Turkish island with Greece. John and I also shared the experience of living through World War II amid the heavy bombing of his hometown of Birmingham and my hometown of Manchester, England. Along with his expertise in coins and interest in stamps, my former hobbies, we had a lot to talk about when we attended the Amos Press retiree dinners (pre-Covid 19) where we always sat with John and Margaret to revisit the past. After a 50th RAF anniversary trip to Cyprus, Sherrie created a keepsake DVD for John, so he could see the many changes that have happened to the island over the many years since our service. Margaret, please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of John, your dedicated husband and partner. May he rest in peace.
