Jeannette H. Lyerla(1912 - 2018)

Jeannette H. Lyerla passed away peacefully under hospice care in Santa Paula, CA on April 4, 2018, at 106 years of age. She was born in 1912 in Cambridge, MN to Henry and Anna Olson.

Jeannette was the eldest of five children. Some of her fondest memories were bringing home milk from the nearest farm for the family, helping to name her younger siblings and assisting her mother giving food to local Indians that came to the door when they were in need. Her father was the county treasurer and Jeannette, with the help of her younger brother, delivered tax bills from their little red wagon.

In 1925 the family moved to Daley City, CA. Jeannette graduated from Jefferson Union High School in June 1929. She worked as a long distance operator and later a milliner in San Francisco. While walking a picket line she met her husband who was delivering lunch to his sister, also on the picket line.

Jeannette and Ross Lyerla were married in 1936 in San Francisco, and were married 53 years. After their marriage they moved to Long Beach, CA where Ross was a meat cutter. David, their first son, was born in Long Beach in 1939. They later moved to Santa Monica where son George was born in 1943. During summer months the family traveled to Napa for family gatherings at the family ranch on Mt. Veeder.

Jeannette lived in Santa Paula the last 48 years of her life. She loved to go to the movies, knit, crochet, play cards and make doll clothes. She always grew her own fruit and vegetables. At the age of 95 she joined a Red Hat Society group and continued her social activities.

Jeannette is survived by her son David and his wife Lynne and their children Wendell and Erin; her son George and his wife Carol and their children Brad and Beth; her grandchildren: Andrew and Jacob McCullough and Taryn Conway. She was preceded in death by her husband Ross, sisters Elanor and Victoria, brothers Woodrow and James.
