Dr. Katherine Starks-Lawrence, D.B.A 1956 - 2016
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Dr. Katherine Starks-Lawrence, D.B.A., (60) departed this life December 24, 2016, at Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 30, 1956, in Springfield, IL to Betty Wright Starks and Charles Starks Sr. of Springfield, IL.
Being a Springfield resident, she continually served the community and held many board positions including President, Board of Trustees, Lincoln Library of Springfield, IL. She was also a member of Junior League of Springfield, The Links Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Katherine valued education and thoroughly enjoyed teaching students. She was currently completing a Doctor of Business Administration in Leadership from Walden University. She received a BA and MA from University of Illinois Springfield. She brought her previous work experience as an Auditor for JP Morgan Chase Bank, Vice Chairman/Commissioner for City of Springfield Civil Service Commission, Technical Manager, Bureau of Budget & Fiscal Management of IDOT and President & CEO ENERi Consulting & partnership with ZG Worldwide, LLC, to the college classroom.
She touched the lives of many students through her teaching roles at local colleges including Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Heartland Community College, Millikin University, Lincoln College and her current role as Assistant Professor of Marketing at MacMurray College.
Most of all Katherine Starks-Lawrence was a dedicated and beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She enjoyed traveling and jazz concerts.
She is survived by her husband Larry G. Lawrence, daughter Nicole, mother and father Charles and Betty Starks, brother Rev. Charles Starks Jr (Claudia) of Atlanta, GA. Special cousins: Charles Day, Monica Turner of Springfield, IL and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Katherine was preceded in death by her sister Wanda Louise Alvis.
Funeral Services: Tuesday January 3, 2017 at St. John AME Church, 1520 East Capitol Avenue, Springfield, IL 62703.
Visitation: 10:00am-11:00am
Service: 11:00am-12:00pm
Interment: Roselawn Memorial Park, 1735 S Camp Butler Rd, Springfield, IL 62707.
Ruby Funeral Services, 1520 East Washington Street, are in charge of arrangements.

She always accepted and made me feel comfortable long after her brother-in-law and I divorced. She welcomed me into her home and was always very kind, making me feel like family. I miss her strength and laugh.

My deepest condolences. This news has really rocked me. Katherine had such a huge impact on my life. She came to my aided over a very difficult professional issue. Through her guidance, my life has been forever changed for the better, empowering me as an educator. She was my mentor and ally at Heartland Community College.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Katherine's passing. She was a lovely, kind person and was thriving as part of the MacMurray College family. I was so sorry to hear about Kathy. We were good friends in school and church, but as time went by we lost contact with each other. She was a great person and I thought of her often. I am so sorry to learn of Katherine's passing. She was a shining star when I taught her at UIS and indeed taught me a lot. After graduation she went on to great achievements, and I was always happy to learn about her success. She was a wonderful woman, and the world is sadder without her.
