Wallace V. Matson, 92, of Anacortes, passed away on Monday, November 12, 2012 at the San Juan Rehabilitation and Care Center in Anacortes.
He was born on October 28, 1920, a son to Torger and Selma (Dokken) Matson, in Antler, North Dakota.
Wally graduated from Anacortes High School in 1940 and married Delight Bradley in 1941 and together they had two children, Ann and Victor. Unfortunately they divorced ten years later.
Wally joined the U.S. Army in 1944 serving on the 235th Naval Hospital Ship F.Y. SLANGER, sailing between New York and various parts of the European Theater of Operations. He completed surgical technician school, but in a short time, realized it was not his cup of tea. Wally became a laundry operator on the ship, a trade he had performed before entering the service, and continued throughout the rest of his working years.
In 1952, Wally met and married Edith "Ede" Haney, and they were together for sixty years, even sharing the same room at San Juan Care Center. Ede passed away on October 5, 2012 with Wally near her side. Through the years, he enjoyed their blended families, gardening, wood working, fishing, camping, and making all kinds of things, especially for the grandchildren.
Wally is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ede; brother, Joe; sister, Luella; and granddaughter, Dorie Campbell.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann Payne and son, Victor Matson of Anacortes; brother, Morry Matson of Sedro-Woolley, WA; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A private family graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Fernhill Cemetery in Anacortes.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands. To share memories of Wally, please sign the online guest register at www.evanschapel.com.
