Howard Everett Howell, 81, a longtime resident of the Skagit Valley, peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2014 surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born in Dufur, Oregon on September 29th, 1932. Howard graduated from high school and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard.

After serving in the Coast Guard, Howard married Janice Larson on June 9, 1956. Shortly after they were married, Howard put himself through college, attending Skagit Valley College and WSU. During these years they had three children, Wesley, Carolyn, and Cheryl.

Howard received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1962 and began his career as a high school agriculture teacher and FFA advisor. Howard's passion for teaching shone through student accomplishments over the years, coaching many FFA state and national public speakers, livestock judges, state and national officers.

Howard retired from teaching in 1999 and he continued sharing stories of his students to whoever would listen. The WSU Cougar pride has been passed down to the generations Howard loved his Cougs.

He also was an avid pinochle player and enjoyed a game with family and at local senior centers. Howard treasured his family and was very proud of his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice.

He is survived by his son, Pastor Wesley (Linda) Howell; daughters, Carolyn (Tim) Hazen and Cheryl (Dave) Porter; sister-in-law, Karen (Chuck) Pyron; sisters, Violet, Voncele and Harriet; six grandchildren, Anna, Kirsten, and Karl Howell, Joseph Hazen, Ryan (Suzi) Rivas, and Elisha (Joel) Casparek; three great-grandchildren, Samantha Rivas, Ryan Rivas and Thomas Casparek; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Salem Lutheran Church. All FFA members are invited to bring their jackets.
