ROBERT RAY "BOB" BAKER

1930 - 2009

ROBERT BAKER Obituary

Robert Ray "Bob" Baker, Sr. was born October 15, 1930 in Strang, Oklahoma, and died February 24, 2009 in Kirkland, Washington, at the age of 78. That is when he left for his final gig to meet his new "groupies".

Born to Ray and Lou Allice Baker, he spent his early life in northeast Oklahoma. When Bob was very young, his father took a job at Sunshine Mine in Kellogg, Idaho. The family followed later in the year, traveling across the country by Greyhound Bus and they settled in the Deadwood Gulch area. During World War II, they moved to Stanwood, Washington, where the family worked in farming and logging. Bob graduated from Sedro Woolley High School in 1948, his Bachelor Degree from Western Washington State College in 1952 and his Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Seattle University in 1970. His professions were teaching and school counseling.

In 1955 he married Frances Butler, a fellow elementary school teacher, and they made their home in Bellevue. He first taught the 5th grade at Clyde Hill Elementary and then to Sunset Elementary. He later became a homeroom teacher at Tyee Junior High. At this time he attended Seattle University and acquired his Masters Degree in psychotherapy. He became a counselor hired for the newly built Interlake High School but soon realized that his true desire was to help elementary-age youth. He implemented important children's programs that were later adopted at the state level. He ended his teaching career at Robinswood Elementary when he retired in 1989.

While his career was in counseling and teaching, his true love was in music. He was given a ukulele at age 8 and at age 14 worked in the alfalfa fields to earn enough to purchase his first guitar. With no formal music training, he taught himself to play his guitar; he developed a deep understanding of music theory. He had many students in music until giving his last lesson 2 weeks before his death. He was a popular musician and singer who played all over the Puget Sound area with many famous musicians including Stan Borison, Roy Kennelly, Harry Lindbeck and Mike O'Dell, as well as nationally known artists. He regularly played for dances in the local area, primarily at Sons of Norway in Everett and the Bothell Senior Center. We will miss his velvety voice and multi-faceted playing. He was also a talented woodworker, having made detailed toys and multiple pieces of furniture for friends and family all his life. He divorced in 1993, and moved into an apartment in Bellevue until 1999. He then moved to Woodinville where he later met a new neighbor Joy Schopp and they were married in 2004.

He is survived by his wife, Joy; his first wife, Frances; his son and daughter in-law, Rob and Susan Baker of Snohomish; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bob Herman of Kirkland; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Robert Arriola of Ephrata; step-daughter, Mollie Ragland of Everett; step-daughter, Lucy and Chris Czesak of Bothell. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A family celebration of his life was held on February 28. A celebration with his music friends is open to all who would like to attend at Sons of Norway dance, 2725 Oakes Avenue, Everett, Washington on March 5 at 2:00 p.m.

I live in Montana now and it has been 20 years since Bob and I were elementary school counselors together in the Bellevue School District. I noticed in Bob's obituary that Bob and I became counselors for the District about the same time in the early 70's. And in the twenty years of shared meetings for the district and in our counselor support group, Bob's kindness and sense of fun and caring support of children and their parents and teachers was something I could count on like a sunny day or a warm fire or comfortable shoes. In l965 I came to Bellevue as a kindergarten teacher. I couldn't play the piano or read notes but I had a four string guitar and Bob Baker for a teacher. He was giving guitar lessons after school in a classroom and I signed up. I had (and have) a four string Martin guitar and we would all sing folk songs. I am visiting back in Bellevue and it feels like a less welcoming place knowing I won't be visiting and laughing with Bob when the counselors get together.

So sorry to miss the celebration at Rob and Susan's... our thoughts and well-wishes were with all of you. Bob and I spent hours in the work-shop, or building a back deck, or just talking...he'll remain one of my favorite people and I was so lucky to call him a friend. The years as neighbors when they lived at 1070 were such special times... he watched as we raised our kids and help guide us when we needed "suggestions!" He'll be missed. Big hugs...

I was sorry to hear of the loss of Bob Baker. We worked together in the Bellevue School District for many years, I as a school nurse and he as a counselor. He was so helpful and understanding of the children and staff. A great loss.

I was privileged to work with Bob during his entire career as an elementary school counselor. In addition, we were members of a special "Support Group" which met monthly for many years, sharing personal concerns and insights. Bob was a calm, warm, caring, and skilled counselor and friend, and we appreciated sharing the ups and downs of our lives. He will remain a special presence in my heart.

It was 46 years ago when I walked into a music store to start my first guitar lesson with a man who had a warm smile and a kinda shy/quiet manner. It was at that old music place alongside 99. I was in 6th grade. He was so patient and encouraging. I gladly gave up Saturday mornings to sit with him and learn cords (reading music was another matter). As serindipity would have it, he became my junior high counselor at Tyee and followed me through 3 very rough years of my then young life. The following years I'd return to Tyee to say hello to him and occasionally I'd bump into him after high school graduation. It was winter of 1985 when I last saw him. I'll share that story when I'm at his celebration of life this coming Thursday. But let me state here that he was instrumental in saving my life. Fortunately, I got to tell him that but now I wish I had reminded him again and again. His contributions to my wellbeing are part and parcel to who I am today and of course, I thought he'd be around forever! But actually he is; he's in a corner of my heart with his insights built into my psyche.

To all of you who had Bob in their daily lives - how lucky you were.

God bless you Bob and thank you with all my heart.

Bob and I attended Western Washington at the same time and were both interested in music. We. later, played in bands together and became good friends. We all will miss his frindship and musical talents.
