Vida Leona Evans, a life long resident of Burlington, died peacefully after a brief illness on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Mira Vista Care Center in Mount Vernon with her daughter by her side. She was 98 years old and a 30 year survivor of breast cancer.

Vida is the oldest daughter of Emil and Anna (Dalan) Nelson. She is the 3rd of 7 children born to the family, 6 children survived and lived long lives in Skagit County. She attended Burlington Schools and graduated with the class of 1932 from Burlington High School.

In 1936, on her own, Vida moved to the San Francisco Bay area where she found employment. While there she met Eddie G. Evans, a security guard at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Vida and Eddie were married on October 23, 1937 in Mount Vernon. They later settled in Burlington and raised 2 children. They enjoyed a wonderful 25 year marriage ending with Eddie's death in 1963.

Vida was the head cook at Burlington-Edison High School from 1958 to 1970 where she is remembered for her outstanding cinnamon rolls. She and Eddie also ran the concession on Saturday night at the Seven Cedars Dance Hall for many years. Vida was a member of the Burlington Lutheran Church, active in numerous church and service groups and associations over the years including; Sons of Norway, Alpha Federated Woman's Club and Rebecca Lodge. Vida loved music and she enjoyed playing hymns and songs on her piano and organ. She lived on Anacortes Street in Burlington for the past 70 years.

Vida was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eddie, and brothers Floyd, Norman, and Virgil Nelson as well as sisters-in-law Jean Nelson, Grace Nelson and Jeanne Nelson, brother-in-law Reuben Kordal, her nephew Steven Mitchell, her great-nephew Russell Nelson, and her nephew Donald Schoon.

She is survived by two sisters, Esther Kordal and Donna Mitchell and by brother-in-law Jerry Mitchell and numerous family members spanning four generations.

She is survived by her immediate family including her daughter Trillis (Jim) Selvidge and son Nelson (Jo) Evans; her grandchildren Eddie Parker (Ariane), Marc Parker, David Evans and Sarah Holland (Matthew) and, her 4 great-grandchildren, Evan Parker, Aleah Parker, Parker Holland and Sophie Holland.

Visitation will be held on Monday and Tuesday, March 25th and 26th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at Hulbush Funeral Home, Burlington.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 27th at the Burlington Cemetery. A social gathering and catered luncheon will follow this service in Vida's home at 716 S. Anacortes Street, Burlington.
