Ray Murphy Garrett, 93, of Mount Vernon, died Sunday, October 13, 2013, surrounded by his family and honorary daughter at the home of his daughter in Mount Vernon.

Born February 11, 1920, on the family farm in Atwood, Oklahoma, he was the son of Charles F. and Sintha V. Garrett.

In May 1938, Mr. Garrett graduated from Atwood High School, Atwood, OK and attended two years at Murray State School, Tishomingo, OK, majoring in Agriculture. In 1940 he traveled to Los Angeles, CA and worked in auto service until he entered the U.S. Army in Jan 1942. During WW II, he was an anti-aircraft, searchlight, radar, and fire director in battles and campaigns including Naples-Foggia, Tunisia, Central Europe, Rhineland, and Rome-Arno prior to discharge in Oct. 1945.

On March 23, 1947, he married Jean Elizabeth Ashworth in Los Angeles, CA. Mr. Garrett enlisted in the Field Artillery Reserve in
Nov 1947, and served briefly during the Korean War, before his final discharge in Nov 1951.

Returning to civilian life the couple adopted and raised a daughter, he worked as an engineer in the electronics industry and in the maintenance dept at Golden West College before his retirement; living in Costa Mesa, and Huntington Beach, CA, before settling in Mount Vernon in 1988. His final years were enjoyed in retirement communities following the death of his beloved Jean in 1995.

Mr. Garrett loved traveling, spending time with his family and friends, a good conversation, and most of all his Lord Jesus Christ.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Bruce Hubert and grandsons Daniel, Noel, and Brian Hubert, all of Mount Vernon, WA; a sister-in-law, Gretchen, and husband, William; treasured nephews, nieces and cousins; an honorary daughter, Karen and husband, Herm VanderHelm and family; long-time friends, the Bonita Paulman family, and dear friend, Rose Minor and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jean; his parents, C.F. and Sintha Victoria; a granddaughter Victoria Elizabeth Hubert; two brothers, Lemuel and Charles Garrett; sisters, Mary Eva Hunter, Jewell Vaughn, Wynema Knight, and Lorene Grey.

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 2:00pm at His place Community Church in Burlington.
