Shirley Jean Hampton Knudson, 77, a longtime resident of Mount Vernon died Monday, April 21, 2014.

She was born in Bell, California and graduated from Southgate High School in 1954. She later attended University of California at Los Angeles, and graduated with a degree in Education in 1958.

It was during her college years she met her husband, Dennis Knudson. She was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1957. After Dennis returned from a LDS mission in Taiwan, she and Dennis married in November 1960. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles Temple.

They moved to Utah, where Shirley taught elementary school in Alpine School District while Dennis attended Brigham Young University. Upon his graduation, they moved to Anacortes, Washington where they started their family. The family had the opportunity to spend 8 years in Kenner, Louisiana, due to Dennis's work before returning to Skagit Valley.

She served for over 50 years within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Shirley had the opportunity to serve with the Young Women and earn the "Golden Gleaner", as well as her service in the Primary, Relief Society, and Family History Center. She and her husband served two full time missions in the LDS Cannery.

Shirley loved reading, traveling with family, genealogy and a good conversation.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dennis; parents Evelyn and Dallas Hampton.

She leaves behind her three daughters: Michele (Phillip) Spackman, Jennifer (Sean) Poole and Debra (Shane) McCarthy and her six grandchildren: Rylie, Andra, Noah, Kaden, Amy and Kyle.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the dear friends who provided love, support and care to mother while she adjusted to life without Dennis, and needed additional help the last few years.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014. A viewing will be held at 10:00AM, the funeral services at 11:00AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mount Vernon. A graveside services will follow and be held at the Mount Vernon Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home of Mount Vernon.
