Jean E. Guthrie, 84 of Mount Vernon passed away peacefully in her home of 50 years surrounded by her family and friends on Monday, August 25, 2014.

She was born on September 1, 1929 in Highlands, NC to Lester and Amanda (Miller) Talley.

In 1957 she moved to Mount Vernon, WA with her husband, Fred Dowdle; son, Robert; and daughter, Sallie where they lived until 1959.
In 1963 Jean married Roy Guthrie and then the family moved to Big Lake, WA where Jean resided until the time of her death.

She worked in several commercial laundries in Skagit County and as a seamstress in a men's store in downtown Mount Vernon until she retired. Although she had retired she still continued to do alterations, because sewing was her "passion" in life. She also loved decorating her home and gardening.

She is survived by her two sisters, Ann "Tootsie" Chastin of NC, Barbara Barnes of NC; son, Robert Dowdle; daughter, Sallie Dowdle Hoffman (and husband, Ron); grandson, Raymond Dowdle (and wife, Sally); granddaughter, Heather Lanning (and husband, Dale); six great-grandchildren, Hallie Thomas, Dylan, Holton and Dalton Lanning, Michael and Jamie Marshall; and one great-great-granddaughter, Jade Sanchez.

A celebration of Jean's life will be held at a later date.
