Evert Lee Riley Obituary
Evert Lee Riley

June 4, 1935 - Nov. 29, 2019

MISHAWAKA, IN - Evert Lee Riley, 84, passed away peacefully in his home Friday, Nov. 29, 2019. Visitation will be tomorrow from Noon to 3 pm at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka with Memorial service to follow.

He was born June 4, 1935, “in a veil” to Samuel & Irma (Abbiehl) Riley on a farm in Bremen, IN, youngest of five children, needing mare's milk to survive. His father served the Navy during WWII, while Irma struggled to keep food on the table. After the war, his parents divorced. Evert was split from his siblings and sent to live with his Aunt Goldie and Uncle Ed.

Fifteen months of slopping hogs and eating well, he returned home a strong teenager with everything to prove. Arrested in 1951 for incorrigibleness and sent to reformatory school, he volunteered to sweep floors in the barber shop to avoid moving dirt… this was the beginning of his passion for creative hair design. He was a life-long entrepreneur and adventurer.

Evert began barbering and married Josephine (Jodie) Ann Yohe in 1954, having two children. They divorced in 1972. In the early 60's he started the first of its kind in Indiana, Riley's School of Style, challenging the industry by coaching hair design, often with only a straight razor and comb as a platform artist. He's credited with bringing West Coast men's styling to Michiana and upon his retirement from Riley's Studio One in 1994, was referred to as the Godfather of hair (and hairpieces.) In addition to his styling career, Evert owned and operated two nightclubs, a limousine service, three clothing stores and three motels locally and in Florida.

As an adventurer he loved travelling by land and sea. With his motor home towing the car and Bouvier dog Puff on board, he and the second love of his life girlfriend Rita drove to Alaska. On water, Evert was a true Captain and master sailor, always prepared for his opportunity to sail around the world. Once sailing the North Atlantic, it affirmed his admiration for sailors of rough waters. Evert lost Rita to an infection and when Puff died, so too did the sailing dream. He continued sharing his skills at pool and backgammon as the years passed. Evert's final hobbies included feeding birds, striped sunflower for “Mom's cardinals” and food scraps to his two crows, trained to come by his caw.

He is survived by his daughter, Toni Lee Ann Joyner (Thomas) and son, Victor Vincent Riley (Renee). His grandchildren include Sondra Staggs (David), Evert W. Riley (Dawn), Shannon Jeffries (Eric), Tricia Leslein (Keith), Rachel Wallace (Jervone), and Shawn Sawyer. Evert loved children and was blessed with 23 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great- grandchildren. Preceding Evert in death were siblings, Wallace Dean (1930), Sally Joan (2004), Wava Jean (2011), and big brother Paul Eugene (2015); and great-grandson, Tyler Duane (1994).
