Melina Dee Perdue Obituary
Melina Dee Perdue

May 11, 2018

ROANOKE, VA - Melina Dee Perdue, 66, of Roanoke, Virginia, died peacefully with family by her side on Friday, May 11, 2018. Preceded in death by her parents, Melvin L. Perdue and Patricia Jane Thomas; and stepfather, Randy Thomas Carroll, she is survived by her devoted husband, Thomas R. McDonald; her loving children, Rebecca Conroy (husband Kevin) and Stephen Powers (fiancé Jessica Cornwell); as well as three sisters, Tammy Blain, Hillary Bunn, and Tanya Basulto. Her cherished grandchildren include Leo Patenaude III, Dina Conroy, and Dillon Conroy. Her circle of love is completed by Hannah, Rocco, and Meme, her four-legged companions and the loves of her life.

Raised in Mishawka, IN - a small town near South Bend - Melina's dedication to service started at the age of 18 when she joined the United States Air Force, serving as a member of the police guard. She became a registered nurse, serving in various and progressive nursing and administrative roles at Potomac Hospital, Mount Vernon Hospital, and Inova Health System. In 1993, she followed Tom to the Roanoke area, serving as Director of Patient Care Services at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, Director of Nursing at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley, and progressively rising in rank over the years to Executive Vice President at Carilion Clinic. She held BSN and MBA degrees. An avid advocate for her patients, she served as a gubernatorial appointee to the Virginia Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Board, as a member of the state board of CHIP, and on several special task forces of VHHA (Virginia Health and Hospital Association).

Melina was equally committed to bettering services in her community and played active roles on the boards of Children's Miracle Network, March of Dimes, Komen Greater Roanoke Valley, DePaul Family Services, Mill Mountain Theatre, and others. She held multiple leadership roles - including President of the Board - for the Roanoke Valley SPCA.

Melina's joy for living and adventure enriched and inspired the lives of those around her. A world traveler, food and wine enthusiast, and animal and human rights advocate, she lived fully and purposefully. She will be remembered most for her warm and generous heart, her fun and positive spirit, her integrity and courage, her kindness and encouragement to others, and her loyal devotion to friends and family. She also adored every animal she ever met.

A service honoring Melina's life will be held on Thursday, May 17 at the Patrick Henry Hotel in Roanoke, Virginia, beginning with a social hour from 4:00 - 5:00 PM, a Celebration Service from 5:00 -6:00 PM, and an additional hour of fellowship from 6:00 until 7:00 pm.

In lieu of food and flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Roanoke Valley SPCA (1340 Baldwin Avenue NE, Roanoke, VA 24012) or to the Carilion Clinic Foundation (P.O. Box 12187, Roanoke, VA 24023) for the Melina Dee Perdue Oncology Fund.
